Started the read last night.
Some very interesting guys have played for our club over the years. Looks like we had manager and financial issues through the early 20th century as well. Nothing changes there then !

My Grandad used to say County were the team to watch up until Christmas. Then they would fade away as they couldn't afford to be promoted out of Division 3 North because of all the extra travelling involved.

My Grandad used to say County were the team to watch up until Christmas. Then they would fade away as they couldn't afford to be promoted out of Division 3 North because of all the extra travelling involved. My Grandad always used to say "they don't want to go up", right up to when they did go up in 91. He used to always brag to me about bumping into the great Jack Connor and chatting to him about County when he was collecting his pension! I remember buying the match video from that Scunthorpe game and watching it with him once, particularly when it got to the post-match interviews in the dressing room, when Thorpey said to Keith Coates something like 'all those that said we don't wanna go up, they can shove it up their arses now...'. Now, my Grandad was genuinely one of THE greatest people you could ever wish to meet and 17 years on from his passing I still miss him now, but I remember thinking at the time "are you listening to this, Grandad?!"

Classic 'Tash', that! I still have the same vid. Great that his comment escaped the (or any) editing process!

As a point of interest I have the one and only football medal my granddad won.
It's a runners up "Derbyshire Junior Medal" from 1923 (solid silver) playing for Hayfield FC.
It was the non-league county competition as opposed to the "Senior Medals" competition for pro and semi pro clubs.
Collectors item, I hope.

It did, indeed! I fear that I might have been rather less creative and simply stuck a Post-It note on. It was a blue one, mind...
