Disappointing result. I thought we had it in the bag until one unfortunate error. This is my take on how the team is panning out so far - We have two very good midfielders in Walker and Turnbull who work their socks off but both cannot possibly last the 90, leaving gaps in midfield as they invariably tire. We really need a defensive/central midfielder who's role is just to sit and cover without putting the miles in. Keane could be the answer here. Dimaio is an excellent find but we shouldn't stifle his creativity by asking him to replace Walker or Turnbull. Warburton is too deep. This leaves Mulhern isolated. Push Warburton forward and play Dimaio in the 10 position. Similar to Walker/Turnbull, Minihans energy is fantastic but he also tires and if he is played at RB as he did today then he will struggle to close down effectively as the game goes on, which is why McKenna had so much joy late on. Keep him as right midfield/winger. We need a better long term strategy for LB. I've mentioned before that Duxbury is not a LB but a very effective left winger. Even when he's fit his defensive effectiveness was exposed multiple times last season. We need a cast-in-stone LB. Finally, like a stuck record, I feel that JG needs to sit down and watch his team, let them play, cut them some slack, and see what happens (although we all know this ain't going to happen - leopards and spots spring to mind). I wonder how many good players have left prematurely due to JG's constant criticism. After the game today he went ballistic - I wasn't the only one to hear it! This surely can't help.

After the game today he went ballistic - I wasn't the only one to hear it! This surely can't help. hmm. when i saw that mantack had lost possession for the goal i immediately thought 'he'll be getting the stinkeye then'... and there's an element that the players should own their mistakes, and particularly if they keep making similar ones. but there's also an element of they're non-league players, and if they're working hard and trying to give their best, then once it has been said that something needs to improve or can't happen again, it's probably time to lay off.

Agreed, I think this is where the frustrations and restraints of part-time football are evident with Jim, and maybe he needs to take that into account sometimes. However, these players know we have ambitions of getting ourselves back to full-time status and promotion, so if their personal ambitions don't align with Jim's, then they should never have signed up in the first place. We all know about Jim's lack of patience with players not listening, but I'm sure there would be plenty of people complaining if he sat quietly in the dugout for 90 minutes with his arms folded. If the players don't like being screamed at, they should listen the first time and stop f***ing up - it's simple, really. For anyone wishing for Jim to be replaced, and this is not aimed at anyone in particular, just the fan base in general - be very careful what you wish for.

I never like this kind of 'blame' culture because at the end of the day Mantack lost the ball but how many County players were 'defending' behind him ... loads...
No excuses for Jim but conceding so late on must be frustrating and just adds to the pressure.
A very quiet first half from the County fans .. it had the atmosphere of a training match. But there was enough t be happy about with Kirby doing an hour and Dimaio looking creative...I predict some team is really going to get thumped soon when we are in top gear and that should keep Jim quiet.

Gazz, I think players expect to be shouted at from the sideline. Its the manner and lack of clarity that I think is the issue.
I think JG's comments are a bit contradictory. Firstly he complains that players don't follow his instructions laid down during training then says the players need to be full time to enable them to have more time to absorb things! On the pitch I get the impression that players seem confused. I recently heard JG screaming to someone taking a throw-in to throw it to feet when it was very obvious every one of our players who were available had been double marked ie one in front and one behind so it was impossible. When the ball was eventually thrown down the line, he was apoplectic with rage. The player taking the throw then argued back stating the obvious. JG just muttered to the rest of the bench and sat down. How can this relate to 'not following instructions'? I also remember JG stating in an interview last season that he wanted players to think for themselves on the pitch and read the game. When they do this, he roasts them! I heard Matty Warburton having a pop back at JG yesterday making just this point. I understand players have a responsibility for carrying out the managers wishes, but they are not robots. They need to be allowed to make decisions they feel are the correct ones, either rightly or wrongly. Thats how you progress. A friend of mine is a big Chorley fan. We have had this conversation about managers (at all levels) in general for a while now and it seems that now Matt Jansen has left, Jamie Vermiglio apparently has brought a more measured, player friendly approach. Top of the league with five clean sheets with, at best, a similar quality squad to ours. Their 5 games so far have been equally as tough as ours.
I agree players need coaching from the sidelines but there is coaching and there is controlling. I suspect with JG its the latter.
Believe it or not, I still feel that JG could still be the man to take us up but, as he demands improvement from his players, then the same must surely apply to himself.

Beyond man-management and tactics, JG has:
- improved position each year - increased squad contact time - increased fitness and strength - decreased the playing squad age - got the academy feeding through - steering us to be able to move back to FT status - created stability with many players now having been here significant length of time, especially for such a division where most managers are dealing with very high turnover each year
Overall, there's been some sort of vision for what's needed to progress within this league and beyond it coming from his management. Anyone can claim we'll be back in the FL by a certain time, but without any foundations to do it then it's meaningless. We have some foundations now.
In one of the programme notes last season, JG mentioned he had targeted this season (as if this is the year we're really going for it) and with bankrolled teams gone from the league (who we wouldn't have had much chance against even if we were FT!), it's up to JG and his staff to make this squad of players into a credible side who remain within reach of the top throughout the season.
Unfortunately, all the above kind of gets lost when you're in the stand seeing him berate Hinchliffe, as just one example, and gesturing sarcastically when he finally finds a player with a kick. When you're a tactical manager, it seems critical that your tactical in-game messages aren't lost in the 'noise' of the constant shouting at mistakes which do not change the outcome of the mistake but simply draw players attention away from the game to be told off for an error even they, as a 7-year-old, would have realised they had made. With the exception of a few over recent season, it's difficult to suggest players don't give their best but sometimes their best is that of a NLN-standard player. I've just watched MOTD and seen worse errors!
