And there we have it. A new Prime Minister "elected" by approximately 93000 largely retired, mostly wealthy southerners. And this tosser has had the brass neck to point out the democratic deficit when Brown was elected in similar circumstances by the Labour Party. Seriously, you couldn't make this sh*t up. Having said that, the "coronation ceremony" was laughable. The Tories clearly have a problem differentiating between pomp and ceremony from pantomime but hey, if you want to introduce the arse end of a pantomime horse as your next PM then they pitched it about right I suppose.

On the day that the Observer reports this www.theguardian.com/society/2019/aug/18/elderly-poverty-risen-fivefold-since-80s-pensionsThe Centre for Social Justice is, despite its name a right wing think tank. The very fact that it is chaired by Ian Duncan-Smith, a man with a worse reputation for lying than Boris Johnson and the author of the changes to the Social Security (sorry, I refuse to refer to it by the American term "Welfare") system that have, as a matter of deliberate policy impoverished millions, leading in turn to record use of food banks, financial insecurity, rising death rates, etc should tell everyone what they need to know. The fact that it is Johnson's favourite think tank should inform everyone about the direction this Govt is about to take. The economy of this country remains one of the wealthiest in the world and yet only yesterday Javid, the Chancellor chooses publicly to describe himself as a "low tax man". For "low tax man" read supporter of small Government, supporter of de-regulation, supporter of the removal of the kind of "red tape" that protects the residents of death traps like Grenfell Tower, tax avoidance scams run by major multi-nationals, people being exploited by ruthless employers using zero-hours contracts, calling employed people self-employed when they are self-evidently not. One could go on and on but it becomes tedious. The direction this wretched Government is about to take is being hidden by a smoke-screen called Brexit, taking back control, reassertion of sovereignty (apply whichever bullshit slogan you're ill-informed enough to believe) so please, nobody who votes for these people ever stand up and complain when your life gets worse.

i thought i'd already completed more than half my working life. if that comes in, i haven't. i thought we were now at a point where life expectancy had peaked and is slightly declining, so why work longer?

Couldn't put it better myself, Duds.
I now feel guilty that I will be receiving my state pension at the end of September (although this is 7 months after I reached 65).
If we leave these barstewards in charge you will need to be in your coffin before you can apply for what is rightfully yours.
Early General Election ? Bring it on. Bojo could be the shortest serving PM for a long time.

i thought i'd already completed more than half my working life. if that comes in, i haven't. i thought we were now at a point where life expectancy had peaked and is slightly declining, so why work longer? Because the birth rate is falling. The fact that this is the perfect argument in favour of immigration is lost on the right wing bigots who oppose it. The pro-Brexit group who really piss me off the most are those already in receipt of the state pension who are happy for the point at which I may be eligible to recede into the distance as long as I continue to finance theirs via my taxes. The most curious aspect of it all is that Farage and the Brexit Party Ltd don't mention this, any more than the right-wing zealots in whose tightening thrall the current Tory Party remain.
