Drone flies into UK prison with knife, drugs and phones:For the first time in the UK a drone has been used to attempt to smuggle drugs weapons and mobile phones into a prison.
Rather than flying into the Bedford Prison the DJI Phantom 2 Vision actually crashed and got caught in the barbed wire of the prison walls.
The plan was thought to be to fly in at night, hover while an inmate got close, then drop the payload into the prison grounds. In reality the £900 drone along with its knife, phones and drugs payload was useless. The same drone is featured on a YouTube video carrying a weight of just over 600g.
Drones have already been used to smuggle contraband into US and Canadian prisons but this is the first time an attempt has been made at a UK institution. Sonya Minney, chief officer of the Bedford Guild House charity, which backs on to the prison, said: "Staff have recently covered up the cell windows that face outwards to prevent stuff being thrown in."
The DJI Phantom 2 Vision has a range of nearly half a mile so the people involved with the flight did not need to be near to the prison when carrying out the drop. Although perhaps they should have had a little more practise before making the attempt over the barbed wire.
Adam Bailey, of the Association of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, said: "It's a pretty stupid way of trying to get stuff into a prison. A drone sounds like a swarm of bees and has flashing lights so you're likely to attract attention. You'd have to be very skilled to pull this off and these guys clearly weren't."Article here

Airbus A320 plane crash: Germanwings flight down in French Alps with 148 feared dead:An Airbus A320 operated by the Germanwings airline has crashed in southern France, President Francois Hollande has said. The plane was travelling between Barcelona and Dusseldorf when it came down in the French Alps, according to the AFP News Agency. Mr Hollande said the site of the crash was "a very difficult area to access", and said that there were not expected to be any survivors.
While the plane was believed to have a capacity of 174, Le Monde and local newspapers cited aviation officials as saying that 142 passengers and six crew were on board at the time. French officials said that flight number 4U 9525 vanished from radar screens about 80 minutes after take-off, and that suspected items of debris had been found near the small town of Barcelonnette in the Alpes-de-Hautes-Provences.Full story here

A tragedy. Doesn't sound as if there's much, if any, hope for those on board.
Thoughts are with their families and frends.

Thoughts with all the families. That plane is one of the safest in the world, apparently.

Horrible news, thoughts and condolences to all involved.
The last 3 years haven't been an advert for the safety of airlines. A terrible turn of events that needs serious investigation.

Absolutely shocking.
What is the answer? Whatever measure they introduce next there's bound to be a drawback to or way around it.
While there are those that can develop solutions for problems, there are also those that can develop problems for solutions, that's why we have wars.
I couldn't even begin to imagine what the families of all involved are going through right now. A terrible, and seemingly deliberate waste of innocent lives.

the angela merkel quote sums it up for me - that the latest news has given it a "new, simply incomprehensible dimension".

This is absolutely bloody bizarre: Head transplant: Russian man to become first to undergo pioneering and controversial surgery:The first man set to undergo a head transplant has been revealed, saying that he finds the controversial surgery “very scary, but also very interesting”.
Valery Spiridinov is set to be the first person to undergo the operation. It will be carried out by controversial Italian doctor Sergio Canavero, whose optimistic plans have mostly been met with scepticism.
But Spiridonov — who has the rare genetic Werdnig-Hoffman disease, which gradually wastes away muscles — says that he is willing to undergo the risky procedure to give himself a chance at living in a healthy body.
“Am I afraid? Yes, of course I am. But it is not just very scary, but also very interesting,” Spiridonov, speaking from his house in the Russian town of Vladimir about 120 miles from Moscow, told MailOnline.
“But you have to understand that I don't really have many choices,” he said. “If I don't try this chance my fate will be very sad. With every year my state is getting worse.”
Spiridinov said that he has spoken with Dr Canavaro over Skype but they are yet to meet. The Russian man was chosen from a number of people that emailed and wrote to Canavaro to ask to undergo the procedure, he said.
Canavaro raised scepticism earlier this year when he said that he would be able to carry out the procedure within two years. Other medical experts called the procedure unlikely, and rare, as well as highlighting the fact that it would never be used for those that simply want to replace an ailing body. Some have even compared Canavaro to Frankenstein.
The head transplant is set to work by taking the head off a person suffering from a wasting or degenerative disease, and transplanting it onto the body of someone who is braindead but still has a functioning body. It would be akin to the process of moving organs into a body — but would rely on the donor’s family giving away the entire body, rather than just parts of it.
The procedure was carried out on a monkey in 1970. But surgeons didn’t transplant the spinal cord, so the monkey could not move, and it lived for only nine days and died when the head was rejected by the body’s immune system.
It has never been done on a human, but Canavaro claims that all the necessary science and technology is now in place. “I think we are now at a point when the technical aspects are all feasible,” Canavaro has said.Article
