Just read the story about the nine year old girl in America who accidentally shot and killed her instructor while being shown how to use a high-powered submachine gun at a shooting range.
A tragic story and a most disturbing one too.

Unbelievable story.
What right minded person allows their 9 year old to try out a Uzi ? What right minded person sets up a shooting range where this can take place ? What right minded State/Country/Authority can give a licence to operate a place like this ?
A recipe for disaster and up there for a Darwin Award.

up there for a Darwin Award. Along with Charlton Heston and the rest of the f**king head the balls that have supported the US gun lobby. Lunatics, and the worst thing is that tragedies such as these won't even make them bat an eyelid.

Very true, it's a horrible thing to happen but they would never change the gun laws. I agree with the fact to protect your family by any means but no child should be given or encouraged to use any weapon.

yeah but in a country with so many guns, many people feel they have to have one to counteract any risk from the others...it's a virtuous circle for charlton heston. here, it is emphatically not our constitutional right to bear arms and for most people, a length of wood under the bed will do fine to fend off a burglar who is carry a screwdriver and not much else...
i mentioned the tobacco lobby on a thread the other day, and the gun lobby is as venal - when you hear some of their rhetoric designed to discredit the opposition...yet it's never a surprise to hear about some sociopathic nutjob taking a gun into a school or cinema. they're a liberal country in some ways, but extraordinarily old west conservative in others.

for balance, burgers, the other half of the thread's title, i have far less of an inherent problem with...although 'fast food nation' tells some fairly horrific stories about the meat industry and their lobbies!

Only in America. That place is a law unto itself.
I know I'm biased but I fully understand the ill feeling towards the US from Canada and why they want less and less to do with the States.

Crazy situation over the pond. Believe it's approx 4 weapons per person over there, and if you consider not everyone has one then the real number per person goes up. It's frightening...
Good job we have some of the tightest licensing laws in the world.
