Couldn't have been much closer, that.
Unlucky, Senior Seasiders.

Greater Manchester League Over 65s June (final session 4) Div 2
Blackpool 0 Kingsmaid 0 Close game with a very few chances for either team. The "Redcar imports" were absent which made it a much more even game. Fair result. Although their sub keeper plays for Scotland WF Association - so another non-local.
Blackpool 0 Fleetwood 0 Another game that could have gone either way with a couple of good chances for both teams especially one from Fleetwood with the last kick off the game. I had gone low to my right and the ball flicked of the defender's shin going left. I threw a hand at it by my knee and flicked it over the bar by 2 inches and wide of the post by 2 inches - Banksy style !!!! Should have seen the guys face. It was a picture.
Blackpool 2 Purple Panthers 0 Comfortable win with 2 goals within a minute from open play ! Goals from Mike Lea and Tom Jaques finding the net. Time manged well after going ahead
Blackpool 1 Salcom (Salford) 0 At last a goal after 3 scoreless matches between the teams. John Henshaw netted a beauty. Important victory if you read below.
Fleetwood 2pts Kingsmaid 6pts Salcomm 5pts Blackpool 8pts Panthers 3pts
Final League positions. Kingsmaid +6pts total 37 Salcomm +5pts total 20 Blackpool +8pts total 20 Fleetwood +2pts total 19 Panthers +3pts total 9
A turn around in Blackpool's fortunes. Kingsmaid were champions before the day started and will progress to the competitive heights of Div 1 (replacing relegated Preston who were promoted last season in Autumn). Panthers will be relegated to Div 3 and could bounce back immediately as they are a good team. We wait to see who will be promoted to replace them. Fleetwood slipped to 4th place after being comfortably 2nd after 2 sessions and the first 8 games.
And so to 2nd /3rd place. Blackpool and Salcom unbelievably finished level on points, level on goal difference and level on goals scored for and against (after 16 matches !!!!!). It was agreed to share the Trophy for Runners Up spot even though Blackpool had had the better of the head-to head games - 6pts to 3pts.
For the Record;- P16 W4 D8 L4 (3 to Kingsmaid Northern All Stars) For 8 Against 7 (4 from Kingsmaid) Points 20 (10 clean sheets)
Looking forward to renewing friendships and competitive fun in September.

Good day's work, Senior Seasiders! 🙂 Agreed, Maccy. That sounds like an incredible save, Banksy! Good riddance to Kingsmaid. Hopefully the more level playing field will see the Senior Seasiders getting promoted, with Redcar Kingsmaid ending up red-faced and relegated! Well played, Banksy & the Senior Seasiders!

Blackpool Tournaments Report. 18th June 2022 played at Park View Rd , Lytham
An excellent day well organised by Neil Mitchell and Andy Charlesworth at Blackpool tournaments. 32 teams entered the 50s and 60s competitions from all over the UK to make this a very well attended event. Thanks to all the referees who had the difficult job of controlling 250 or so highly competitive senior players. Remember "If you are old enough. you are good enough" to quote Mike Bassett.
The 50s youth squad started well with a 4-0 victory over Oundle Town and followed up with a close draw against Boca Seniors 0-0. A feisty match with Dumbarton was settled by a penalty to win 1-0 but then a defeat to a strong W'nesborough side by 2 goals to 1 saw the Senior Seasiders qualify for the semi-finals of the top prize in second place. An excellent West Hartlepool team came out the winners 2-1 in this game and went on to win the overall competition with a penalty shoot out in the Final.
The 60's squad also started strongly despite conceding a rocket shot 15 seconds into the first game. However this was pegged back and a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury ensued. This was followed up with comfortable wins against Atherstone 2-0 and Bolton 1-0 before a great game ended 1-1 with table topping Townshend (Ayreshire). A final 3-0 victory against Linthingow confirmed Pool's second slot in the league format and a semi-final vs Blackfyne (Durham). Unfortunately this lead to a 1-0 defeat in a very cagey encounter.
Congratulations to Garstang though, who finished fourth in the League, but went on to win the play-off games against Townshend and then Blackfyne to lift the Trophy on the day.

WFA National Inter Gender/Age Sponsors Event - Burton Albion Training Ground.
Good day out at Burton when all the Ladies 40s, 50's and 60's teams came together with the Gents 50's, 60's. 65's 70's and 75s sides as well as the newly formed Parkinson's Disease Mixed Group . One player from each regular squad played on each of 12 different teams across 4 pitches in 20 minute games of football. 96 national players on duty !
First game, against a strong Blues team, and we Whites played like a side who had never seen each other before (which we hadn't !!). We scored against the run of play but then conceded 2 - the 2nd a bizarre goal. I got down to a low hammered shot from one of the 50s guys which spiralled up above cross bar and took a terrific back spin and in off the other post. I claimed an own goal as it was going away from goal until it bounced. If only I could do that on the golf course.
Blues then lost to the Parkinson's team 2-0 who we then beat 2-0 to send us through as group winners on goal difference.
Semi-final against the Orange side ended in a boring 0-0 draw. We then won 3-2 on penalties. 2-2 after the 1st 3 pens, I saved one from the 50s captain (Michael Brown) and in sudden death one from the Guernsey 60's captain
Sadly the final was a game too far for us. A much younger side (including 2 male 50's and the 60's captain) beat us 1-0 deservedly.
Sat with Tommy Charlton (youngest brother of Bobbie and Jack) for our meal which was highly entertaining.
Think I did my credentials a world of good in front of the 70s selection committee (18 months to go !). Watch this space.

Well played, and bad luck, Lennie - especially in such exalted company! This ↑↑↑ Unlucky, Gaffer, but it sounds like there were way more positives than negatives to come out of the whole day! Maybe you could share a few of The younger Charlton's tales by way of a late addition to the C.H.A.O.S thread?

Back to Greater Manchester League action this week.
Martin Dawson Memorial Trophy - Over 60s Sunday 4th Sept. (One of the North of England Premier competitions with 18 teams involved)
vs Blackburn L 0-2 (inc a pen) vs Garstang W 1-0 vs Halifax L 0-1 (after missing 4 cast iron chances !) vs Fleetwood L 1-2
A steep learning curve for a fairly new squad of players. Overall winners - Kingsmaid (fancy that)
GMWFL Over 60's Sept session Division 2 (The group of death with a strong Bury team relegated from Div 1 and an equally strong Carlisle side promoted from League 3. Blackpool, Bolton and Preston make up the league all capable of beating each other.)
vs Bolton D 1-1 vs Carlisle D 0-0 vs Bury L 0-1 vs Preston D 0-0
Didn't help having the Beast of Blackpool missing for both dates.
All close games played in good sport. Probably my last appearance for the 60s as I am away for the October session and we have a new 60 year old keeper being prepared for November onwards. Certainly feeling my age and was beaten by 4 goals due to pure pace of the shot after defensive cock-ups !

You're not retiring are you, Banksy? As for that bloody Kingsmaid, can't you all just form a breakaway League and leave them to it? They may be regular winners but having class and integrity is far more important in my view, which is something they seem to lack. Always the Kingsmaid, never the Kings!

I intend to stay with the 65s squad Gazza, and I am allowed to play Over 70's as an underage keeper (safety rule). I will be playing against the Isle of Man (away) in November for the GMWFL team and still retain my place in the England 65s squad if they ever arrange anything for us to play !!!! Busy, busy. Ano Domini creeps up on all of us eventually.

Greater Manchester WF League Over 65's Division 2
Good day for the Seasiders as their Over 65's kick off their challenge for honours this Autumn. (Runners Up last Autumn 2021 and Spring 2022).
Blackpool 1 Bolton 0 (wicked deflected goal from Tom Jaques) Blackpool 1 Panthers 0 (penalty from John Henshaw) Blackpool 1 Fleetwood 0 (John Henshaw found the net from open play) Blackpool 2 Salcom 0 (John Henshaw again with a second from Wai Hon Tsang)
A historic moment as the Seasiders netted their first ever full house of 12 points in 7 years of playing at Heywood at 60's, 65s and 70s' age ranges. Need to keep this momentum going over the next 3 sessions in Oct, Nov and Dec.
Easy day at the office for yours truly. 5 shots to save in 4 games. One going high (poser for the photographer), one going wide (two handed and held - where was the man with the camera), one with the opponent in the area (so would have been disallowed) and two with my toes having gone the wrong way !!!
Table Blackpool 12 points Bolton 7 Panthers 4 Fleetwood 3 Salcom 2
