We reach the early 90s and hopefully we've all got the concept of CHUMY by now.
This is how it feels to get half way through, so time to share your songs - we don't want our CHUMY Compilation to be an unfinished symphony.
So, come as you are (there's no other way) and share your songs - whether you've posted in every one so far, or you want to start now - don't enjoy the silence otherwise here's where the story ends.
Some early 90s classics from your editor to get us started...
Birdhouse in Your Soul - The Might Be Giants Justified & Ancient - The KLF Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins Television - The Drug Of The Nation - Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy Loser - Beck
Fade into you...

Certainly not of my era now, unless our 3 lads had them blaring away. Let me see what I can rustle up.........
1990 Sinead O Connor - Nothing Comperes to U Billy Joel - We Didn't Start the Fire Tom Petty - Free Falling
1991 REM - Losing My Religion
1992 Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
1993 Proclaimers - I gonna Be (500 miles)
1994 Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around Oasis - Half a World Away
Mainly stuff from our guitar group catalogue then.

Here are my fab five:
1991
Teenage Fanclub: The Concept
Would probably, with all things being equal, have squeezed the Fannies' Star Sign - also from the album Bandwagonesque - into this short-list, too, were it not for my own unwritten rule not to include more than one song by the same act. The Concept has the band's trademark guitars and harmonies at their best, but also a long, anthemic, late-Beatles-type play-out which clinches it the nod here.
1993
Saint Etienne: Avenue
Lovelorn, poignant, and the foremost track from Etienne's best album, So Tough. (But not the one with the best title, which is Conchita Martinez - right, tennis kids?)
Stereolab: French Disko
Anglo/French avant-pop, with an urgent undercurrent. Ironically difficult to dance to at full speed.
1994
Kylie Minogue: Confide in Me
Ah - Kylie. After a two-year absence from churning out Stock, Aitken & Waterman hits, everyone's favourite Aussie returned to action as IndieKylie (or was it SexKylie? - I can never quite remember...) and with this seductive, dramatic number that was about as far away from her previous single, and cover of Kool & The Gang's Celebration, as it is possible to get.
The Wannadies: You and Me Song
Not a chart smash over here until 1996, but this euphoric slab of Northern Swedish power-pop makes it by virtue of having inexplicably bombed at number 119 on its initial release two years earlier.
My choice for the vote? French Disko... naturellement.

Like Lennie, running out of steam in terms of numbers but still some quality if not quantity.
1990 Alannah Myles - Black Velvet Oleta Adams - Get Here
1991 Rick Astley - Cry For Help REM - Losing My Religion
1993 Sting - Fields of Gold Martina McBride - Independence Day
My top pick would be Losing My Religion.

Final choice - not sure yet!

Here goes...
1990
Adamski - Killer EnglandNewOrder - World In Motion - what a Summer, what a World Cup adventure, what a World Cup song and what a footballer Paul Gascoigne was!
Which brings me to....
Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma - I really don't need to explain this one.
The Beautiful South - A Little Time Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart Technotronic featuring Ya Kid K - Get Up (Before The Night Is Over)
Soup Dragons featuring Junior Reid - I'm Free Happy Mondays - Step On They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence MC Tunes vs 808 State - The Only Rhyme That Bites Technotronic featuring Ya Kid K - Rockin' Over The Beat The Charlatans - The Only One I Know Rod Stewart - Downtown Train The Trashcan Sinatras - Obscurity Knocks (how this was never a massive hit is absolutely beyond me)
James - How Was It For You - their best song for me, but it's against some seriously stiff competition for that title. An absolutely incredible band that never seem to get the recognition they deserve, but I defy anyone that even remotely likes them to play their hits album and tell me where the poor tunes are
1991
Vic Reeves & The Wonder Stuff - Dizzy The KLF - Last Train to Trancentral (Live from the lost continent 12" version) The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go (re-released this year due to 501 jeans ad) - l will do my best to forget those tw##s in the Crown Hotel on Great Moor who put it on the jukebox whenever they played pool - they know who they are.
Extreme - More Than Words
I refuse to include James - Sit Down here, not least because of the weapons grade tw##s in the bars in Majorca that year that got down on the floor when this came on - cringe.
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Pandora's Box (I've still yet to add 'Sugar Tax' to my vinyl collection, for reasons that I honestly can't fathom)
Julian Lennon - Saltwater - forever cursed with the comparisons with his Dad, but he's an excellent musician & songwriter in his own right
Monty Python's Flying Circus - Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life - simply due to the altered chorus of "We're up - we're up, we're up, we're up!" that echoed around EP during and after that final day hammering of Scunthorpe!
C&C Music Factory featuring Freedom Williams - Gonna Make You Sweat REM - Shiny Happy People The Wonder Stuff - The Size Of A Cow DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Summertime
1992
R.E.M - Everybody Hurts - a song of huge importance to me. It always reminds me of an incident that happened the following year involving someone very close to me.
Thankfully, they're still with us, but I can't say who it was or what happened to them, as it's an extremely private matter - all I'll say is that this song helped me through it.
Who knows how many other people this incredible song has helped, but for anyone that knows someone that's going through a tough time, be there for them and don't let their silence be the last thing you remember - play them this song today, because it may well get them to talk and help to ensure that they're still a part of your life tomorrow.
If you're reading this and you're hurting, please share that pain and talk to someone, it really will make a difference.
Shakespears Sister - My 16th Apology Richard Marx - Hazard The Pasadenas - I'm Doing Fine Now Ugly Kid Joe - Everything About You En Vogue - My Lovin' Annie Lennox - Walking On Broken Glass Annie Lennox - Little Bird The Beautiful South - Old Red Eyes Is Back - what an absolutely brilliant tune!
1993
The Spin Doctors - Two Princes The Spin Doctors - Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong M People - Moving On Up Soul Asylum - Runaway Train Duran Duran - Ordinary World George Michael - Somebody To Love from the 'Five Live' EP - it takes considerable talent to cover this one in a recording studio, but to nail it live at Wembley just takes it to another level. The rehearsal version that's on YouTube is also fantastic, with the likes of Bowie watching in the wings.
1994
Terry Hall - Sense - written performed with Ian Broudie & The Lightning Seeds, they both released it as a single (Terry was guest backing vocalist on the Lightning Seeds version). Both are great versions, but I prefer Terry's! Pato Banton with Ali Campbell - Baby Come Back Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm - fantastic tune Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do The Cranberries - Linger Blur - Girls And Boys Blur - Parklife - Oi! M People - Renaissance
Right, I'm going to leave it at that and declare my favourite to be Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.
Cheers, Thankyou.

Some brilliant songs there, gazz.
Wholeheartedly agree with you on James. I saw them last year with my daughter at Crystal Palace Bowl and we're going as a family to see them at Scarborough Open Air Theatre. They are brilliant live.
I love Stutter, Strip Mine and the live One Man Clapping.
And loads of brilliant songs, and even Yummy has some really good tunes. So consistent over the years.

I'm going to get the 'Yummy' album, but I'm not sure which one to get - the Indie exclusive Marbled red, or the Yummy 'orange' coloured version. Which one do you have, mate?

Haven't got it on vinyl yet. I have to control my spending on records or I'd go bankrupt!
