Thanks Archie. Is Santa bringing you a new abacus this year ? Yours must now be in need of repair ! My generation was brought up with mental arithmetic tests every morning at primary school. Ten simple multiplications read out consecutively at normal speed eg 8x7 3x9 4x6 5x8 8x4 6x9 2x8 7x7 9x5 6x5 Took less than a minute so you had to pretty much do the calculation as you were taking in the next figures. It's hard to explain but, after a while, you don't even think about it and just visualise 8x7 as 56. To this day I only use a calculator to confirm a manual result.
