Burnley (for those living on planet Mars) are currently streets ahead at the top of the Championship and look like making a speedy return to the Premiership under their manager, Vincent Kompany (legendary Man City defender).
Founded on 18 May 1882, it was one of the first to become professional (in 1883), and subsequently put pressure on the Football Association to permit payments to players. Original members were from the rugby team Burnley Rovers, who voted for a shift to association football, since other sports clubs in the area had changed their codes to football. In 1884, Burnley led a group of 35 other clubs in the formation of the breakaway British Football Association (BFA) to challenge the FA's supremacy. The FA changed its rule in 1885, allowing professionalism. In October 1886, Burnley's Turf Moor became the first professional ground to be visited by a member of the Royal Family, when Prince Albert Victor attended a friendly between Burnley and Bolton Wanderers. The club was among the twelve founders of the Football League in 1888–89 and one of the six based in Lancashire
The club entered the FA Cup for the first time in 1885–86 and was one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888–89. From the 1950s until the 1970s, under chairman Bob Lord, the club became renowned for its youth policy and scouting system, and was one of the first to set up a purpose-built training ground.
The team have played home games at Turf Moor since 1883, after they had moved from their original premises at Calder Vale. The club colours of claret and blue were adopted before the 1910–11 season in tribute to the then Football League champions Aston Villa.
The team avoided relegation to the Football Conference, the highest level of non-League football, on the last day in 1986–87, after they won against Orient and their rivals drew or lost.
Monday 30 May 1994 In A play-off final that was full of incident but not of good humour, Burnley overcame a Stockport side who finished the game with nine men, to win the right to play First Division football in the next season. County were one player down for all but 14 minutes of the game, and two short for the last half-hour - with both Michael Wallace and Chris Beaumont being dismissed for violent conduct - yet they displayed such determination in adversity that they nearly forced extra time. The Burnley fans, who formed the vast majority of a crowd of 44,806, were demanding the final whistle a full 10 minutes before David Elleray brought the proceedings to a halt.
Stockport County 1 Burnley 2. Hence the animosity between the two sets of supporters !

Ooops forgotten to update this. Probably lack of interest at this late stage as the inevitable sides survive (not as much fun researching the big boys !)
Man City 6 Burnley 0. So one of the two Lancashire survivors get a claret nose and find out the reality of what next season will entail.

Sheffield United.
Sheffield United Football Club is a professional football club in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, which competes in the EFL Championship. They are nicknamed "the Blades" due to Sheffield's history of cutlery production. The team have played home games at Bramall Lane since their formation. For most of the club's history, United have played in red and white striped shirts with black shorts. The club was formed as an offshoot of Sheffield United Cricket Club in 1889and the first team to sport United in it's name.
United's original nickname was in fact "The Cutlers" from 1889–1912. City rivals Wednesday held the nickname "The Blades" in their early years, however in 1907 Wednesday officially became "The Owls", in reference to their new ground in Owlerton, and United would later claim "The Blades" nickname for themselves
They were invited to become founder members of the Football League Second Division in 1892. They won promotion to the First Division at the end of the 1892–93 season and went on to be crowned English football champions in 1897–98. United went on to win the FA Cup on four occasions: 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925; and were beaten finalists in 1901. They spent 41 years in the top-flight before being relegated in 1934.
A slow decline saw the club drop to the fourth tier by 1982, though they would win an immediate promotion as Fourth Division champions in 1981–82; this achievement meant that Sheffield United are one of only five sides to have won all four professional divisions of English football. (The challenge - if you wish to accept - is to name the other 4 please )
Sheffield United were founder member of the Premier League in the 1992–93 season, during which they scored the first ever goal of the competition. They were relegated in 1994 and after losing play-off finals in 1997 and 2003, the club finally regained their Premier League status at the end of the 2005–06 campaign under the stewardship of manager Neil Warnock. However, United were relegated the following year and dropped into League One in 2011. They spent six seasons in the third tier, losing in three play-offs campaigns, before manager Chris Wilder led the club to promotion as champions in 2016–17. Promotion to the Premier League followed in 2018–19, though they were returned to the Championship in 2021.
