FA Cup First Round (Proper) result
Chesterfield 1 Northampton 0
The strength of the National League shows again as the Cobblers served up a load of erm....... Cobblers.
Other stand out results were, Alvechurch winning at Cheltenham, Buxton beating Merthyr (I bet the BBC don't send their cameras there again after last year's rainfest) Curzon Ashton holding Cambridge Utd, King's Lynn dumping Doncaster, Grimsby spanking Plymouth and Farnborough overcoming Sutton.
Fylde, Salford, Wrexham still in the draw. Could be interesting on Monday.

Wimbledon Football Club was an English football club formed in Wimbledon, south-west London, in 1889 and based at Plough Lane from 1912 to 1991. Founded as Wimbledon Old Centrals, the club were a non-League team for most of their history. Nicknamed "the Dons" and latterly also "the Wombles", they won eight Isthmian League titles, the FA Amateur Cup in 1963 and three successive Southern League championships between 1975 and 1977, and were then elected to the Football League. The team rose quickly from obscurity during the 1980s and were promoted to the then top-flight First Division in 1986, just four seasons after being in the Fourth Division.

Wimbledon's "Crazy Gang"—so-called because of the boisterous, eccentric behaviour of the players—won the FA Cup in 1988, beating that season's League champions Liverpool, and thereby became one of only three clubs to have won both the FA Cup and its amateur counterpart. In 1991, following the publication of the Taylor Report recommending all-seater grounds for top-flight clubs, Wimbledon left Plough Lane to groundshare with nearby Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park—an originally temporary arrangement that ended up lasting over a decade. The team remained in the First Division and its successor the FA Premier League until they were relegated in 2000.
In 2001, after rejecting a variety of possible local sites and others further afield, the club announced its intention to move 56 miles (90 km) north to Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. The idea of Wimbledon leaving south London was deeply unpopular, both with the bulk of the club's established fanbase and with football supporters generally, but an independent commission appointed by the Football Association granted permission in May 2002. A group of supporters, appalled by the decision, responded by forming a new club, AFC Wimbledon, to which many Wimbledon fans switched allegiance.

AFC Wimbledon currently hold the record for the longest unbeaten run of league matches in English senior football, having played 78 consecutive league games without a defeat between February 2003 and December 2004. They are the first club formed in the 21st century to make it into the Football League.
The club was initially based at Kingsmeadow, a ground bought from and then shared with Isthmian League club Kingstonian F.C. until 2017, and with Chelsea F.C. Women from 2017. In November 2020, the club moved to Plough Lane, a new stadium on the site of the defunct Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, only 250 yards away from the original Plough Lane, Wimbledon F.C.'s home until 1991. The new stadium has an initial capacity of 9,215, with the option of expansion to a maximum 20,000 at a later date.

Fantastic effort putting this together, Lennie and a brilliant read!
Extra points for not mentioning that awful by-product in your Wimbledon story which, should now and forever, remain unnamed - nicely done!

That matters not, Gaffer, it's still a good read and you went to the trouble of putting it all on here!👍

The info becomes a little less obscure as we progress through to the bigger boys. But here goes.
West Bromwich Albion Football Club is an English professional football club based in West Bromwich, West Midlands, England. They compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. The club was formed in 1878 and has played at its home ground, The Hawthorns, since 1900.
Albion was a founder member of the Football League in 1888, the first professional football league in the world. The club has spent the majority of its existence in the top tier of English football, where it has played for 82 seasons. The club has been champions of England once, in 1919–20, and has been runners-up twice. Albion have reached ten FA Cup finals and won the Cup on five occasions.
The first win came in 1888, the year the league was founded, followed by wins in 1892, 1931, 1954 and most recently in 1968, the club's last major trophy. The club was founded as West Bromwich Strollers in 1878 by workers from George Salter's Spring Works in West Bromwich, in the Black Country. They were renamed West Bromwich Albion in 1880, becoming the first team to adopt the Albion suffix.
In 1885 the club turned professional, and in 1886 they reached the FA Cup final for the first time, losing 2–0 to Blackburn Rovers in a replay. They reached the final again in 1887, but lost 2–0 to Aston Villa. In 1888 the team won the trophy for the first time, beating strong favourites Preston North End 2–1 in the final. As FA Cup winners, they qualified to play in a Football World Championship game against Scottish Cup winners Renton, which ended in a 4–1 defeat.
On a personal note, I once played at WBA's training ground for New Mills Grammar School as Derbyshire Champions against the Staffordshire Champions (as West Brom was then) in the English Schools' Trophy 1st Round second replay. We lost 2-1 !
So, a team with some FA Cup history to play on although much of this was a while ago. I remember Jeff Astle scoring the winner at Wembley vs Everton in 1968. They also won the Cup in 1954, a vintage year when a certain historian/limerickist was born.

Needless to say The Hawthorns (pub quiz answer spoiler) is the highest ground above sea level in England at 552 feet above sea level.
Chesterfield's Saltergate is a mere 360 feet above sea level (18th highest) and Edgeley Park at 238 feet above sea level is only 32nd highest. (Grimsby's Blundell Park is lowest at 2 feet above sea level) just 1 foot lower than St Mary's in Southampton.
Yes, it's a slow day at Lennie's Homestead.
