Today the El Palo boys are away in the most local of our derbies. To Málaga B or to be more accurate Atletico Malagueño, not the reserve team as such because they don’t have a full reserve team. This is their academy side. The number 11 derby, because the bus starts in El Palo and goes right past the ground used by Málaga B at the far end of its route, was actually my first El Palo game less than a month after arriving. Theirs is one of only two grass pitches in the division. We are currently 4 points off the playoffs as everyone else has played this weekend and Málaga B are 3 points ahead of us. A tough ask ahead. I’d be happy with a point.
Wednesday is a public holiday and there is a return to action at the Nuevo San Ignacio as we take on Real Jaén. But that’s a story for another day…

To start Feliz Año Nuevo. And by the way for those who are interested in such things the ‘ñ’ is actually a different letter to ‘n’ and so is pronounced differently more like a ‘ny’ as in España!
Initially I’d like to apologise for the lack of match report for the fixture against Real Jaén l(the last home game on 8-12). I had typed up an extensive report and then for some reason not posted it. Then when I returned to heaven it had disappeared and I could t be bothered typing it all again. In brief a 1-1 home draw against a team who have a stadium that holds 20,000 and brought a full coach load of fans. Jaén is one of the 8 provinces that make up Andalusia and so their team is the equivalent of Malaga C.F. In their province. Good game very open, either team could have won!

The next game for the Paleños was away to Motril and ended in a 2-1 defeat on the 12-12, complete with a red card for the boys and an injury time consolation. Since then Covid has curtailed any action with two games cancelled due to cases in the opposition.

Today is a public holiday to celebrate the arrival of the three kings with their gifts, this is when kids here get their presents! What better way to celebrate than a midday kick off! In Spain the second half of the season sees you play the teams in the same order as the first half but obviously in the other ground! So today saw us play the Athletic Porcupines, could we improve on the 1-1 draw that opened the season? At kick off we were in 11th position and the Porcupines in 5th occupying the final play off spot. 4 points and one game more played than El Palo!

So on to today’s game, an early start in which my colleague insisted on starting with a beer, I couldn’t before midday and had a cafe con leche. Grand total of 2:10€. After 9 minutes a good ball in from the left by Dario was well controlled by Falu Arando who took it round the keeper and slotted home 1-0. We had barely sat down when club captain Duran spotted the keeper off his line and tried a chip from inside the centre circle. The keeper watched the flight of the ball judged it to be going over and left it, ooooops 2-0 only 10 minutes on the clock! Just four minutes later the Porcipines striker took a shot from 30 yards out which bounced awkwardly in front of the keeper, over his shoulder and in 2-1. The ball then came to their number nine with an open goal at his mercy, smashed against the bar! Then on twenty five minutes the ball came to him again and with his right foot eight yards out with the goal gaping he managed somehow to screw it five yards wide of the left stick. On thirty one minutes a good passage of play saw El Palo build up well on the left a ball in from the right saw Dario in space twenty five yards out, he curled it sublimely into the bottom right hand corner of the goal 3-1, on forty two minutes a foul on the right hand corner of the box gave the Porcupines a chance to reduce the arrears, which they did with a well struck left footed free kick which I had the misfortune to be directly behind. 2-3 and time for a rest. (descanso being Spanish for rest and half time!)

There is a strong possibility that I celebrated the half time with a cerveza, Teo cans of the extremely lovely Estrella Galicia costing a might 2.40€ in total at the bar! Anyway I digress, back to the football…
The second half started slowly for El Palo as the Porcupines came out with much more vigour and were justly rewarded in the fiftieth minute with an equaliser 3-3. This prompted the old classic triple substitution a few minutes later for El Palo. Don’t panic! Everyone stay calm!
Fortunately one of those to come on was Pepe Capitán (no he’s not the captain but a lovely old fashioned centre forward). On seventy two minutes a delightful ball inside the left full back set the number two free down the right wing, he swung in a superb cross and I knew before it arrived that Pepe Capitán would be there to power it home as indeed he was 4-3!
The game continued to flow end to end and in added time a break through the middle by El Palo captain Dúran, stopped with a solid but fair challenge he went down injured having dislocated his right shoulder, with all subs used he stayed on the pitch with his arm hanging limply down at an uncomfortable looking angle. He still was able to occupy their defence by staying near the halfway line, even receiving a ball played out and laying smoothly out to the right wing for one final charge upfield which the porcupine keeper blocked. The final moment of the match at which point he collapsed to the floor in pain, true captain marvel material!
More importantly the three valuable points move El Palo to within one point of the playoffs! Next up Torremolinos away. Top of the table with a five point cushion over the chasing pack. Time to bring them down a peg or two! ¡Vamos!

Sounds like a cracker of a game, Duds. Many thanks for the report... which, by way of contrast with your match conditions, I read with snow falling outside Macc Towers!

Righty, I'm sitting here with sleet falling outside contemplating whether to spend my Saturday decorating the living room or braving the elements to watch Bonnyrigg Rose play the Spartans in a Scottish Lowland League match and you're describing a game played in the ideal conditions with beer. Just joking, there's no competition. I'd rather be freezing my b*ll*cks off watching Scottish non-league football than decorating, or watching in temperate conditions with beer....no....honestly.....I'm not jealous.....noooo.....not at all!
