I received the following SMS today: I was at home at the time and, as well as being off work sick and recuperating in the bedroom right above the front door, I also have a ring doorbell installed, which picks up and records EVERY person who comes near the door, without fail. Add to this the fact that I have no outstanding deliveries, I decided to do some research and found that there was a similar scam last year. So I visited the Royal Mail scam page: personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6905/~/what-email-%2F-text-%2F-facebook-message-scams-should-i-be-aware-of%3FThe SMS message is almost identical, except for the link they ask you to click to reschedule the delivery, but I imagine they all lead to the same thing. This one takes you to: royaimail.co.uk/reschedule. If you can't spot the fakeness in that address, they've used an 'i' and not an 'l' in 'Royal'. The worrying thing is that it came in a message thread I've got on my phone which is full of genuine Royal Mail SMS messages. Some scams in the past have been linked to the Royal Mail app, so if you have it on your phone, it may be best to do what I did and remove it. When on the fake site I entered some blag personal details to see what it led to and, unsurprisingly, it was a credit/debit card payment details page! WARNING - DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN THEY ARE GENUINE, DO NOT BE A SMART ARSE LIKE ME AS IT'S NOT SAFEI hope this helps prevent anyone being taken in by these absolute scummy bastards.

Thanks for this, Gazz-man - these scams are getting ever more tricky to spot. Get well soon, too, matey!

I had one purporting to come from DPD last week. From memory, the wording is the same.

Happy to help, MHH I don't know how it ended up in a thread of legit Royal Mail SMS messages on my phone, but it did and that's the most frightening aspect, how can this happen if it's not from the same sender? Could the scammers be hacking into the RM server, or even a RM employee past or present be using the RM SMS system for their own ends? The other worrying aspect is the address they send you to click on. They've spelled it RoyaImail, with a capital 'I', which looks like a lower case 'L' on standard mobile phone texts, so these guys are seriously devious and will have no doubt already conned thousands from unaware people since I got my SMS yesterday.

Fortunately with DPD you can trace the whereabouts of your delivery so it's not difficult to check its authenticity if you're in any doubt.

Thanks for the warning, gazz.
We've had quite a few DPD and DVLA scam emails and texts recently.
A first this week is an automated scam call saying my Amazon Prime had automatically renewed and to press 1 if this was an error. Never been so offended!
You've got to be on the alert the whole time.

Not sure whether I'm particularly exposed to this kind of crap but I regularly get emails purporting to be from HMRC (I've been self-employed) the TV licensing authority, (particularly amusing since I don't have a tv) Netflix, (ditto, see previous), bizarrely, the CAA (this was a curious one as I've recently bought a drone and had to register it with the CAA), DPD, (as described above), Paypal (you wouldn't believe the number of times my account has been used fraudulently) telling me it's been suspended, etc, etc. When I say regularly, I mean 10+ a week! On top of that my phone regularly pings as communications telling me that some well known personality became a millionaire having previously invested £250 the previous day which I believe come from the Ukraine.
And then there's the ad's, usually from the US exhorting me to buy junk from the States. Now I know I'm slightly over-weight but I could get a little offended at the volume of slimming products they want me to buy.....and then there's bitcoin! f*** me, Bitcoin! What is that all about? The volume of the latter increased exponentially after having subscribed to the NYT so beware that one, seemingly US organisations have no compunction about flogging or re-flogging your details to anyone stupid enough to buy them.

Christ, mate, that's a lot of spam. I've had the HMRC ones via SMS too, but they were from a mobile number, so were easy to spot. They're starting to get very convincing now, though, so this thread will hopefully help anyone that reads it to become a little wiser to their trickery. The easiest way to deal with anything like this is that if you're not absolutely 100% certain its genuine, ignore it. The worry is that not everyone is switched on all of the time and can be caught off-guard, but hopefully the experiences we've shared here will serve to heighten their awareness enough to avoid falling victim to these parasites.
