4th October 1972 County 2 (Russell, Spratt[pen]) West Ham 1 (Best) Att: 13410
From a West Ham site: Long before Iain Dowie's infamous 1996 own goal, West Ham were dumped out of the League Cup by fourth division Hatters on an equally memorable (for them, at least) night. Clyde Best's goal restored parity after the home side had taken an early lead through Russell but a penalty on the stroke of half time - conceded by John McDowell - gives County a famous victory.
I'd been working in London for a couple of years by then and came up for the game on the West Ham special train with a couple of West Ham supporting friends. It was rowdy on the way up and very quiet going back south.

I must say that I had immense respect for Iain Dowie, after he scored THAT goal.
On his return to EP a couple of seasons later as a visiting manager - in a caretaker capacity for QPR, I think - the inevitable chants of "Dowie is a County fan" rang out, and he applauded us all round with a genuine smile. Fair play.

We should definitely feature in the Fourth-Round draw now (assuming it takes place immediately ahead of our kick-off)...!

Shame it's on BT. But the TV money will come in nicely.

Following the postponement of tonight's game, the Cup-tie will now, as things stand, be the next action we see.
Turning this into the Match Thread accordingly. Post all further stuff about it here, ahead of next Mon...

I was there! I think Bobby Moore and Martin Peters played? Must dig out the old match programme. I remember squeezing into the sunken standing enclosure in front of the main stand; looking at EP now, it's hard to believe that standing area ever existed!

If level at 90 minutes does it goes to penalties? Extra-time first, Ceefs, then (if required) pens.

Found the line-up on a West Ham Stats site, Bradders. No Peters - he had gone to Spurs by then - but Moore played, together with Bonds, Brooking, Lampard Senior and a team chock-full of other top-flight regulars: 1 Peter Grotier 2 John McDowell 3 Frank Lampard 4 Billy Bonds 5 Tommy Taylor 6 Bobby Moore 7 Dudley Tyler 8 Clyde Best 9 Pat Holland 10 Trevor Brooking 11 Bryan Robson Bryan Robson was, of course, the man they called 'Pop' - rather than his younger 'come on Robbo, I've seen milk turn quicker' namesake who captained England!

Morning everybody, good luck for next Monday, so glad we dont have dowie's to score for you guys. Be grateful it's at your place and not at the monstrosity we call home at the London stadium. Such a shame fans cant be at the game as this would increase your home advantage. If we play haller up front it would increase your chances, me and a lot of my west ham mates hope Moyes puts out a strong team to show respect to yourselves and the competition. Enough of my ramblings let's hope for a good game , good luck for the rest of the season, stay safe, happy new year and up the hammers👍👍⚒⚒⚒
