Sad news from yesterday, with the passing of Big Jack - aged 85: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53373542Solid defender, excellent manager, and a TV pundit who spoke good old-fashioned common sense. RIP. Sad, too, that there are now fewer than half of the 1966 World Cup winning 11 (Bobby Charlton, George Cohen, Geoff Hurst, Roger Hunt, Nobby Stiles) still with us.

Very sad news indeed, the only Englishman that was loved in Ireland. He put Ireland on the map in footballing terms and not many teams enjoyed the prospect of coming up against us.
He lifted the spirit of the nation in those 10 years he managed Ireland and took the Country to two world cups and a European championship,he put self belief into the minds of the Irish not just on the football pitch but in our outlook on life and that Ireland can compete!
When I think back to that time the Country was buzzing and there was belief, belief for the first time in god knows how long.
RIP Jack.

sad news. an entertainingly grumpy uncle whenever he was interviewed. once saw him on one of the outside platforms at piccadilly, and admired his giraffe-like form from a distance. the '66 winner with a bit of difference to his personality...well...in having a bit of personality. RIP big jack.

I remember seeing him talking about his career with Leeds on 'The Time Of Our Lives' on Sky, saying that he didn't consider himself to be a great player, but he was good at stopping those who were - bit of an understatement, that.
RIP, Jack.

Very sad news, it's a true testament to how good of a player and a coach he was, that he experienced great success in the World Cup with 2 different national teams and is well respected in two 'rival' nations. RIP Jack.
