Brings back memories of Ivan Mauger and his son Kym. Kym went to our high school. I've the greatest of respect to all speedway riders, as being a biker I cant imagine riding without brakes.

Belle Vue was always a great night out (although I preferred the stock cars) This. I went a few times to the Stock cars with a mate when I was a kid and loved it. One year the "Gold Top" world champion arrived from somewhere down south (for once). Of course he had to start from the back of the grid as was the handicap system. As they set of the entire field parted down the middle to let him through and he was then concertinaed by the everyone. He didn't make the first corner. Welcome to northern tin top racing ! My favourite was Willie Harrison. Number 2. Morris Minor body on a Leyland truck chassis with something like a chevvy 3 litre engine.

I think I went to just about all the stock car meetings from 1982 to the very end. How appropriate, that the last final at BV was won by The One And Only Stuart Smith, and that it was his 500th final win.
The Speedway was kept alive by the move to the dog track but the new track and stadium, which is the National Speedway Stadium was only possible because of the commitment of Dave Gordon and Chris Morton. Sadly the council botched the actual construction of the track by allowing part of a bend to sit on landfill, rather than the agreed upon subsurface. Which meant that the flagship meeting to open the new track had to be cancelled at the last minute because that bend was un-ride-able. DG and CM lost a lot of money due to that.
DG and CM reached a point where they couldn't afford to run the club anymore and I've lost track of where the legal disputes between DG and CM on the one hand and the Council on the other.
Anyway the new BV track was modelled on the old one (i.e. the Hyde Road one, not the Dog Track) and it is generally acknowledged to be one of the Best In The World, even the Polish riders say so and they are all certifiably Mad.
Anyway, up the Aces tonight, Eurosport 2 7.30, the Acers have a 12 point lead from Monday's meeting, but they are two men short, Charles Wright and Jye Etheridge can't ride so they have Simon Lambert as a Guest at Reserve and Rider Replacement for CW.
Fingers Crossed.

And they did it! In spite of losing Heat Leader Max Fricke several weeks ago and then losing Charles Wright and Jye Etheridge in the first leg. It was never in doubt though.....

Not the greatest race because the track was very heavy and there was only one racing line, but Willie lead from the green flag to the chequered flag and the roof damn near came off because everyone, and I mean everyone, was delighted that he'd finally done it. The title was a bit of a curse though, for the next year he struggled for form and then he had heart trouble so he didn't race much longer. Mind, his son Paul started racing and carried on the family name with honour.

FANTASTIC achievement from the England T20 team this morning, nothing short of phenomenal!
It was a nervy watch when we lost some vital wickets, but Stokes and Moeen steadied the ship, with the former doing the business with the winning runs!
Fantastic stuff!

With the women’s rugby team and the men’s rugby league team losing I was worried it might be a hat trick of losses. Well done all!
Also well done still to the two sides who lost incredible performances to get as far as they did

That was an astonishing comeback from Murray, absolutely incredible.
Whether or not you like Tennis, there's no denying that he is one of the greatest British sportsmen of all time.
35 years of age and with a metal hip - a phenomenal bloke.
