We’re back!
Where do I start? Well, I suppose an introduction is in order for those who haven’t previously purchased County Life and are simply jumping on the Skrill North bandwagon. Hatter in Macc (Maccy) and myself (Sandy) are part of an online County fans forum called ‘County Heaven’, and last season we were invited to write for County Life. Due to overwhelming demand (and the fact we have some compromising photos of Phil), we’ve been asked to continue and it’s a real honour to do so. It is also no coincidence that our first season as contributors culminated in County Life winning several awards a few months ago (yes, it is – Phil).
If you haven’t yet visited County Heaven, then you really should. We’ve had a drastic makeover during the summer and can now be found at www.countyheaven.mxf.yuku.com. Catchy isn’t it?! Just Google ‘County Heaven’ and you’ll find us. We now have over 360 members discussing all things County, but also other sports and even random topics like our favourite video games from yesteryear or my dream about Terry Wogan. No, really.
Then there’s the Games Room. Here you’ll find my quizzes and Lennie’s Limerick Lounge for your amusement, as well as Downy’s famous Prediction League all the way from Oz! Lastly, why not check out ‘CHIEF’ (County Heaven Index of Edgeley Favourites), where we’re creating an A-Z of County greats? Since our last article, we’ve added the likes of HARDY, LYTHGOE, QUINN, SWORD and THORPE to name just a few.
So, what are you waiting for? Come join the family...

Thanks, Sandy. Afternoon, all. And a warm welcome to our visitors from Boston.
Like County themselves, our next opponents, Workington, and – if memory serves – three other clubs in the Conference North (Stalybridge, Gainsborough and Bradford Park Avenue, for the benefit of our younger readers!), the Pilgrims once enjoyed Football League status...and will be keen to try and regain it. To assist them in their cause, they have a former Hatter, Carl Piergianni, in their ranks. ‘Pidge’ was a popular player among County Heaveners during the year he spent at EP, and, hopefully, will receive a good reception this afternoon.
Ten friendlies over the past few weeks (eleven, if Rodger Wylde’s well-deserved testimonial is counted) have provided a good number of opportunities to see the new squad developing. While pre-season results in themselves perhaps don’t mean or matter very much, deserved wins against the likes of Halifax – with whom we have just traded leagues – and our newish, noisy near-neighbours, FC United, did give the County faithful something of an early boost. And I defy anyone who was at Ramsbottom not to have got a teeny bit excited about snatching victory by the odd goal in seven, after going three...erm, behind!
But, as Jimmy Hill once famously Colmanballs-ed: when all’s said and done, that’s the moment when the talking has to stop. The serious stuff starts right here, right now. So...
Overture. Dim the lights. Curtain up. COME ON COUNTY!
Enjoy the game – and the season.
Animo et Fide.
