Preston and England legend, Tom Finney passed away today, whilst I obviously never saw him play his stats speak for themselves, a very loyal and talented footballer, a combination rarely seen nowadays! Condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in Peace, Sir Tom.

True gentleman and superb player.
Even Blackpool fans had the greatest respect for him.
Met him in a restaurant once (many years ago) and he appreciated the acknowledgement and signed the 3 lads' napkins for them "because they didn't make a fuss about knowing who he was" !!
What a wonderful man.

One of the all-time greats. And a true local, as well as a national, hero.
RIP, The Preston Plumber.

91 is a very good innings, but it's still sad news. every time i saw him on anything, he was enthusiastic but dignified. a great role model for the british male. RIP sir tom.

Aw bloody hell, what a shame. My Grandad said the Preston Plumber was the greatest England player of all time, and he knew his football, so that's good enough for me. A true legend of the game, and truly world class, in every sense of the word. My thoughts are with his friends and family, he'll be sorely missed. R.I.P Sir Tom. That's bloody gutted me that has.

There is a great image with a guard of honour consisting of county players for Sir Tom. I have tried to download it but my tech skills are limited. If anyone else could that would be great.
RIP Sir Tom

I once saw an interview with Sir Bobby Charlton where he recalled a post-match press conference with Bill Shankly after Kevin Keegan had played a blinder for Liverpool. Knowing how much Shankly idolised Sir Tom Finney, the press pushed him for a comparison to Keegan. Shankly shocked the room when he said that, based on Keegan's performance that day, he would have to say that they were equal. The press were gobsmacked, until Shankly continued to comment on the long-since retired Finney's age at the time of the interview and pointing out the fact that he was getting on in years now!
I can't remember the exact words Charlton used, but it was a cracking quote from Shankly, who also said of the great man: "Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age, even if he had been wearing an overcoat."

they're here on his wiki, gazz. the first two are shanks and the last is uncredited.
"Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age ... even if he had been wearing an overcoat." (Bill Shankly)
Shankly was asked about how a top star of the day compared to Finney: "Aye, he's as good as Tommy – but then Tommy's nearly 60 now."
"Tom Finney should claim income tax relief ... for his 10 dependents." (Satirical observation on the weakness of the Preston team in his absence).
