Sadly to report the passing of Blackpool FC legend Jimmy Armfield over the weekend.
A true gentleman of the sport who was always fair and even handed in all his dealings on the pitch and in the commentary box.
He will have been devastated to see all that has gone wrong with his beloved club over the last 10 years.
He was voted best full back at the 1962 World Cup and missed out on the World Cup win in '66 due to an injury.
I had the fortunate luck to meet him on several occasions in and around Blackpool but none more impressive as when he helped us "literally" to kick off the Walking Football group 4 years ago. I was honoured to play in goals behind the great man (even if it was only for half an hour until his knee gave way !).
He will be sadly missed. RIP "Sir" JA.

That's very sad news, Lennie.
A real class act both on and off the pitch, he'll be sorely missed.
Thoughts are with his family, friends and all those lucky enough to have known him.
RIP

Really sad to hear this. An absolute gentleman of the game in every sense - and a local-ish lad (born in Denton), too.
RIP, Jimmy.

Very sad news. He had been around for literally all the time that I've followed football and in all that time I've never heard anyone speak ill of him. RIP

He was also one of the small number of advocates for Terry Venables when he was given the England job - had he not given his backing I doubt we'd have had those memories from Euro '96, such as thumping the Dutch, to look back on.

he was the remaining great gentleman of the game. his voice on radio was right and reassuring. no need for stunt opinions; just said what he thought and was great at it. a decent innings, but he will be missed. RIP jimmy.

On radio 5 earlier Joe Jordan said that when he was on the radio he wasn’t a critic of the players, he would say how they could improve. He said he had the same attitude when he picked up the mess that was Leeds United after Clough’s brief reign and then took the club to the European cup final.
RIP a true gent of the game
