it started with a crash (it's a while since something started with a kiss) advertised on the M62's matrix signs as i drove over. this resulted in the opportunity to get another detailed look at the area between huddersfield and rishworth moor in first and second gear for 25 minutes. so in late again, for the second game running, listening to the commentary as i drove in. finally got in the ground to see one of theirs lash a shot over the bar into the cheadle end.
was pretty tight first half, although we went closest. warburton curled a free kick wide, but close enough that their 'keeper had gone full length to make sure. oswell seemed destined to score with a back post header from a deep cross but their 'keeper got his hands up quickly around his midriff to make a point-blank block. scott duxbury cut back onto his right foot. i was anticipating an average cross as a result, but he picked out oswell at the back post really well, and oswell headed accurately into the other corner. unfortunately, the flag had gone up...want to see that one again because i didn't see it as obviously offside.
second half, as herm says, they went up a gear, and looked like they were minded to go for a win. hinchliffe made several good saves; coming out quickly to block, getting behind a vicious effort that moved in the air, a full length dive; and gary stopforth was furthest man back to position himself outstandingly and get in a block on another occasion. it had gone awfully quiet in the other direction. well into the half, hinchliffe also tipped a header over, but that looked relatively routine.
then scott duxbury was involved in a collision just inside their half. looked for all the world a free kick to county, so of course a free kick to the magpies was given. while we we were still busy crying about it, they had taken it, and their attacker ran too far, too easily with the ball before finishing well.
now i don't get very excited when we snatch a point from the jaws of defeat unless we've been knocking on the door and i really think we deserved it. it wasn't one of those days so while i'm glad we equalised, and it's good to haul ourselves back in, and late county goals are great, etc, etc; it didn't really paper over thecracks canyons in the second half performance. i'm also partly grumpy because i didn't actually see it. i had given up and was looking elsewhere until i heard the anticipation swell in the crowd, and just looked up to see the ball dropping into the corner.
stopforth was pretty good, the full backs were broadly decent, warburton was busy; but hinchliffe was my man of the match. we could easily have been sunk without him. even his kicking looked alright to me today!
