Morning, all!
Just a quick one.
For a long while now I've felt uncomfortable with the 'Like' or 'thumbs up' button on here, particularly when used in response to a post regarding the sad passing of someone or a tragedy somewhere in the world, so I contacted Proboards support for some help regarding the possibility of a plugin to replace the thumbs up with an 'upvote' option instead.
At present I've only had one response, and that was simply to add some code into the forum template to force the 'likes' or 'liked' text to read 'upvotes' or 'upvoted' instead. So I've done this, but unfortunately it only seems to work in 'Desktop' mode and not in mobile view.
So, I've contacted the support staff again to see if a plugin can be created, but for now at least those in Desktop mode can benefit from this change.
It may well be that with the impending release of Proboards v6 (we're currently on v5), it's not worth the time and effort needed to create the plug in, especially when they're working hard at trying to complete v6. Maybe it's something they'll include in the new version, who knows.
I'll update everyone on this if there are any further developments or responses.
Cheers!

Cheers for the update, matey - and for looking into this. It would definitely be worth having an alternative to 'like' in certain circumstances. Let's await developments...

i quite like the idea of separate 'like' and 'agree' for that distinction. like you've done though it can all be done under 'upvote'. there's another bit of fiddling for you to do gazz - i noticed that when maccy and benno had upvoted your post, it said 'upvoted'. when i clicked too, it reverted to 'like' on the text.

oh. ok. now when i've submitted my post, it has changed to 'upvoted' again. crisis over! It's just a bit of a 'make do and mend', I'm afraid, matey. Unless this feature is made into a plugin, the only people who will see this change are Desktop mode users, but it's not the perfect solution by any means. Hopefully it's something that will be written into v6.

I've just received this response:
"No plugins work in mobile view so if that's not acceptable you'll have to wait til v6 when there's no longer a separate mobile format."
I'm afraid it looks like we're stuck with it as it is until v6, folks.
Oh well, it was worth a try.

a downvote could also refer to the poster though ceef.

Alternatively we could get someone from FIFA to directly post on the board and then it would work perfectly in every way possible!

all a bit above my head but I agree that sometimes I feel uncomfortable "liking" certain posts that I agree with.
V6 awaits then. Good try Gazza.

a downvote could also refer to the poster though ceef. Exactly the reason why I never requested that feature, matey. I don't know if you use Reddit, but I have in the past and downvotes caused so much mither on there on the threads I took part in.

i don't. and i kind of think that if you're going to be critical/hostile to what another poster is saying, then you owe them the courtesy of saying why rather than the unexplained negative of a downvote.

Most forums (although not this one) would benefit from a 'Let's take this outside' button. When two posters fall out on a thread they can click the button to create a pop-up with a virtual back alley. Each poster's hard-man character enters the back alley and the posters control their virtual self using the arrow keys and various other keys (U for uppercut, Shift+H+P for hair pull... etc.).
Both posters are led on to think the virtual fight will come to an end as captions such as 'Finish him!' and 'It'll only take one more!' flash up on screen. However, the savvy webmaster (probably called gaz) has coded it so the fight can never end. The posters, unwilling to give up this virtual fight, eventually succumb to real-life starvation.
I did send this idea to another forum. It wasn't adopted and the problem of bickering continues to this day. At least I can hold my head high and say I tried to make a difference.
