However, like cf, I'm going for Stir Crazy because it just seems right. You know what - you're absolutely right, Archie. Vote changed to Stir Crazy. RIP, Gene-ius Wilder.

i've mostly gone a bit sci-fi surreal this week. i enjoyed the time travel? of 'safety not guaranteed', and the microscopic time travel (one second either way) of michel gondry's 'the science of sleep'. 'a scanner darkly', is stunning to watch, either with or without the sound. 'sling blade' has billy bob thornton brilliant in a horrible backdrop of small-town rednecks and wife beaters, but it's a very moving film. 'the sting' clips along entertainingly and is a lot of fun. 'strange days' was great millenial dark sci-fi, and 'synecdoche, new york'...well it was written by charlie kaufman of 'being john malkovic' and 'adaptation' fame, and features a central idea just as mental as those two films, and just as compelling.
then i have 'star wars'. it had more impact on me than any other film because i was an impressionable six years old when it came out. the design - tie fighters, x-wings, the brilliant white stormtroopers, lightsabers...just untouchable, still. no sci-fi film has come close to the number of iconic things in it. 'these aren't the droids you're looking for', the bar scene in mos eisley, vader v kenobi: 'your powers are weak, old man', the millennium falcon's escape, 'i have a bad feeling about this', the death star trench run...stuff and stuff and stuff. the whole package actually, the design, the swashbuckling story, the antagonist (stepping into the corridor with the stormtroopers pursuing the rebels right at the start)...no other sci-fi has ever come close.
yet right now, my favourite 's' is 'scott pilgrim vs the world' (or what edgar wright did when he wasn't making 'the cornetto trilogy'...and for me, it's better than any of them). the over-arching structure is of a video game (boss battles!), the visual language nicks constantly from video games (bosses explode into coins, when scott goes for a wee, a urine-meter appears on screen and empties), and it's just a big, fun riot of a film. it's music and games and youth culture. it makes me feel a bit old but it's fantastic.
so right now, 'scott pilgrim', but really, for the last 39 years, 'star wars' has to edge it. couldn't be anything else.

A close week so far. Currently, Star Wars and Stir Crazy are leading the way with three votes each, closely followed by Schindler's List and The Shawshank Redemption with two each. Some Like It Hot has one vote so far.

A tie between Star Wars and Stir Crazy. I'll set up a poll now to run next week. Please vote for one of those two films by midday next Friday.
