Above is a terrible photo from tonight's 5-3 victory over Buxton! The starting 3 man midfield consisted of CMW anchoring in the middle with Rule and Carney either side of him. The rotating front 3 included Spencer and West. Although it was good to see the youngsters giving it their best, I'll comment on those in the 1st team squad who were given a run out. In terms of fitness, CMW got about 60-65 minutes under his belt and Rule 5 minutes more than him. Carney played the whole game as did Spencer. West played the 1st 45, came off at HT but then reappeared again later in the game. West may have got a slight knock in the 1st half, not entirely sure. Overall though, I think they came through ok. West did well in the 1st half, especially down the left and showed good athleticism and endeavour. Rule looked composed throughout his appearance, nice touch on the ball and had the application and work rate to fill in when some of the younger players were caught out of position. I think he can definitely add something to the team to give variety and a bit of vision, even if in the short term that will probably be off the bench. Carney gave everything, sometimes looking like he wanted to please too much by hesitating to find the perfect through ball or taking shots when he may well have just recycled the ball. Though he's a central midfielder, having seen him pre-season appear more on the right and how he sprung down the right in this one to create a nice assist, I think he generally does better out there as he's pretty nippy, very right footed, has a high work rate over a full game and can put in a decent ball. Since the left side at Alty may be a weak spot, maybe he may make the bench to come on against a tired left back... or not! CMW started poorly with sloppy touches and a headed back pass that put them in for a chance on goal. As it went on, he started to find some of those nice forward passes and the odd switch of play when on. Unfortunately he's still carrying too much and even when more in the middle rather than on the left of 3 with some responsibilities to get out wide, his lack of mobility and energy is still letting his talents down. Ultimately I wonder if he's best moving to left centre half given his aerial strength and sticking with a more mobile and high energy midfield so we can move forward and backward with more fluidity. Spencer was on the scoresheet and looked lively and exhausted at the same time! Exhausted is probably how you guys feel by now reading this! Anyway, it's (again) the lack of fitness that's leaving his talents more hidden than they would otherwise be. I like him though. Fair play to Buxton who scored a long range scorcher and one just shy of scorching. I should have noted the scorers but by the end of it I wasn't even sure what the score was... until my son told me and I didn't actually believe there had been 8 goals. I must stop watching off the ball I think!

great stuff that spencer lasted the whole ninety and rule and CMW both got over an hour. i think all three of them could have a big part to play in county's season if they get match sharp. thanks for the report hermann.

So the more vigilant 'mcduff' on MB has the scorers as Spencer 2, Ruberto 2 and West 1. Basically the interchanging front 3 getting the goals then.

No problem at all, guys!
I should also put on record that my son came downstairs this afternoon and presented me with £4 from his piggy bank for tonight's game. My wife's reaction was 'Oh not again, you went yesterday!' She's not too sure why I've started taking him to the football - his only previous experiences before this season were last year against Worcester and a friendly between N.Ireland and Qatar! Those put her off football for life I think but because he was learning a bit of boxing at the time, I think Lamin Colley having a swing a few moments after entering the pitch as a sub led him to believe he would see knock outs each time he went.
Anyway, at just 8 years old he's now able to watch a whole game, doesn't shout out 'use your jab' and when half time comes he starts reading the book he's brought to the game! I have drawn the line at wearing a bow tie to the football though.

I actually went to the game tonight as well but it appears Hermanns excellent report has pretty much told you everything so again, here is my alternate version, that basically just slightly builds on the points made by Hermann!
Glenn Rule was the man of the match for me, won every ball he contested more or less, had 1 assist for certain and may have had a 2nd one as well but I'm not 100% it didn't take a deflection on the way through...made some big tackles and looked genuinely gutted to go off.
Scott Spencer again looked like it might be one of those nights again for him, all the creativity in the World and no end product but at the midway point of the half he put those fears to bed pretty quickly and had a brilliant game and is my other shout for MOTM, held the ball up as well as someone twice his size would do, used his pace and skill to beat his man and seamlessly transitioned between being a Striker and a Winger constantly throughout the game...he fully deserved both of his goals and with a little more luck could easily have had a hat-trick.
Courtney Meppan-Walter started off a bit sloppily and gave the ball away a bit easily but no more than 10 minutes in he was bossing it, got himself in some great positions going forward, hitting the bar and forcing the 'keeper into a reaction save...defensively sound and it was noticed when we took him off and we quickly shipped a goal. Nothing major to report from the night but a decent run out for the lad.
George West scored our first goal to make the score 1-1 and was industrious throughout the night, didn't trouble the keeper too much in the game but in fairness he was out on the wing for most of the game and wasn't really in the position to score but his play was good, he kept the ball alive a lot and was bombing down the wing for fun winning us a decent number of corners.
Craig Carney a bit quieter than the other first team players, had a decent enough game in the way he didn't make any big mistakes and he did assist our 5th goal as well making it a good overall outing for him.
Special mentions also have to go to Cody Ruberto, a Canadian Striker, presumably on trial had a good game scoring 2 goals and again making himself look dangerous and also to Havern in goal, now some football players are called fat, but you kind of take that as fat for a footballer but this guy was genuinely massive to the point where he literally jiggled, despite his advanced waistband size, he actually had a very good game and made a few vital blocks.
Overall a very positive game for County, disappointing to be pegged back to the 3-3 after leading 3-1 but the fight they all showed to get back in front and not settle for a point or a 1 goal win was fantastic, it was also great hearing Jim going mad at one of the players and instead of that player sulking he actually listened to him and had a great game for it, that's the attitude we need at County.

Just a heads-up - so that you know I haven't made a mistake when tweeting from Alty!
CMW is henceforth (and with effect from last night, it seems) being given an 's' on the end of his name. Fair enough, as things turn out - given that 'Meppen-Walters' is the one under which he is officially regisistered as a player. Just a tad puzzling that he hadn't told anyone at the Club earlier. And that he continues to leave off the 's' on his Twitter account! Ah well...

oh maccy - i've only just managed to force myself to remove the second 'c' i instinctively put in our keeper's name... this isn't countdown you know? they can't just give themselves a new anagrammatical name every week, add or subtract a couple of letters, or be known only by a named and immaculately drawn symbol...

shout out 'use your jab'... i'm considering blaming your kith and kin for our abominable disciplinary record in the first half of last season...
