my close but no cigar films this week are 'the damned united', 'the devil and daniel johnston' and 'dogtown and z-boys'.
top two are: 'donnie darko', with its time-bending story, and time-bending sequences of slow and fast motion set to 'the killing moon' and 'head over heels', which are brilliant and the sort of visual messing that when done well really enhances the mood of the film. unbelievably confident for a writer/director's first effort.
love 'dead man's shoes', from the opening nostalgic sequence over smog's 'vessel in vain', through paddy considine's revenge on the horrible but ridiculous small town bullies of the piece. also filmed at matlock and riber castle - used to go to riber castle loads as a kid. another ode to the underbelly of the north midlands from shane meadows.
i'm just about going 'donnie darko' because i was already thinking i would never back a winner in CHIME...

Day of the Jackal, I always loved this and on my one visit to Italy from where we were staying in south France missed the autopista back to France. Imagine my delight at rounding the bend on the coast road to see the actual border crossing from the movie. Wasted on the family though.

Sorry this is late. Donnie Darko takes it and I'll update the main thread on Monday. Week E starts tomorrow.
