capturing the friedmans is quite queasily grim, but good. christiane f i haven't seen since school, but as it features dame david bowie, i'll list it. eric bana goes bananas in 'chopper', jeunet and caro's 'city of lost children' is gorgeous to look at, 'cloverfield' was a 'found footage' film better made and more satisfying than most. unsurprising given that jj abrams was behind it.
eps has mentioned 'carlito's way', and both pacino and sean penn are excellent in it. the last couple of minutes where carlito is being wheeled away on a trolley, dying, hallucinating the caribbean escape with his girlfriend that he'd wanted, had my eyes stinging when i first watched it.
however, i'm choosing 'charlie wilson's war', mike nichols' final film, written by aaron sorkin of 'west wing' and 'social network' fast dialogue fame, and starring tom hanks as a US congressman who goes from a drink, drugs and ladies party lifestyle to working with the CIA on the assistance to the mujahideen in afghanistan after the soviet invasion. just a really clever and enjoyable film, shadowed, of course, with our hindsight knowledge that the mujahideen mutated into the taliban.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind for me. Honourable mentions for Christine and Catch 22 though.

Ah crap! I forgot Clockwork Orange, too many great films beginning with C!
I may have to come back to C later on, but for now I'm sticking with Casino!

I love the Commitments but I think I will switch to close encounters as it is a brilliant (and slightly scary) film

Brilliant movie.
