Evening gents.
It's the first of ceefer's two turns in quick succession now, and he's provided a few 'W' choices for you to consider:
WUM's
Okay bet you didnt know Wum is the third biggest town in the North West Region of Cameroon, so are people from that town called WUM's?
However not the ones we're talking about today.... we've all come across the wind up merchants; 'bored' individuals whose sole purpose in life appears to be to wind up other forum users. They seem to be happiest when the person they are winding up takes the bait, and to achieve this they go to any lengths, including raking up posts from several years ago to support the points in their posts. I think they may even be happy when they are temporaily banned from the forums as their street cred goes up a notch or two. Very similar in some ways and almost as bad as the In the Know crowd who drop in the lastest news snippets but never the source; so you are left wondering if there's any truth in what they are saying. Okay both types add a bit of flavour and heat to the forums but do we really need them?
Weather forecasters
Remember Michael Fish and his famously incorrect forecasts? He became famous in the wake of the Great Storm of 1987; a few hours before the storm broke, on 15 October 1987, he said during a forecast: "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way... well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!". That evening, the worst storm to hit South East England for three centuries caused record damage and killed 19 people. (Pinched from wiki).
It seems this is the only job where if they get it wrong you still keep your job. Now there are probably rows and rows of computers somewhere in the UK monitoring the weather, but isn't there still a lot of guesswork involved? What they seem to forget is the implications of getting it wrong. So is it okay you feel like a drowned rat, walking down the street with squeaky trousers after a torrential rainstorm, when 30 degree sunshine was forecast...Is it your fault as you should have gone prepared...not....
I guess the only ray of sunshine are the female presenters themselves....check out youtube...but I think we may be missing out here because most are from elsewhere in the world.
Windows 10
It was free; why? Possibly to get people off the earlier more stable operating systems so they can phase the support out and save a load of bucks?. Anyone would think Microsoft was doing us a favour. We had to wait weeks to even get a download and then fro some it wouldn't install. Luckily with a bit of help and technical nouse I managed to sort it out but no thanks to Bill Gates. What happened to all those who don't know an operating system from a shoelace?
So what did we get? Cortana, Microsoft 'Push you to the/over the' Edge, and APPS. Remind me to send my heartfelt thanks to Msoft HQ.
So now we get regular updates as the operating system appears to mimic an emmental cheese; (full of holes..)
The problem is we only know its updating when you try to log-on and you get a blank screen telling you nothing, and sitting there in panic hoping that all will go well and you will see your desktop. With XP you always got a notification but now it seems we are relying on luck more than certainty that our pc will continue to work. Hmm and where do you go for help when you need? The local PC repair shop who will charge you a small fortune to get you back up and running...
What's really lacking is a really affordable alternative operating system to Microsoft. It's been some years since VMS, OS/2, Unix and now Linux. Apple seems the answer but for many its too darn expensive.
Oh and I almost forgot - what happened to Windows 9? and Why did they feel the need to get rid of XP...
Ok chaps, over to you to vote...
