Ooh... the snow is falling. It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas - on CH, at least! Nice work, Gazz-man.

Cheers, Maccy.
It's a bit late this year, I know, but it's just been so busy with work this past few weeks.

Cheers, Maccy. It's a bit late this year, I know, but it's just been so busy with work this past few weeks. Don't worry about it pal, we don't usually get snow until March anyway so you're 3 months early!!

My late Grandad served in the Navy in WW2, was on the Russian convoys and took part in the Normandy Landings.
In May 1944, he was on the upper deck with a friend when his ship, HMS Offa was hit by a bomb during an air attack, I won't go into details but what my Grandfather witnessed wasn't pleasant and he couldn't talk about it until he was in his Twilight years. His friend was among the three men that perished in the attack.
He volunteered when war broke out aged just 19 and, when he was sent out to sea he'd write to his mum to tell her that he was still at his naval base in Rosyth, Scotland, just so she wouldn't worry.
He kept up this white lie to protect his mother until August 1943, when it was reported in a newspaper she read that his ship had completed the milestone of 100,000 nautical miles since it was commissioned - he told me she gave him the b*ll*cking of his life for not telling her the truth.
He was the most selfless man you could ever wish to meet. Indeed, when he worked at Renolds in Reddish in later life, he'd heard that redundancies were being handed out, not to him, but one of those who was getting laid off was a young lad whose partner had just had their first child.
My Grandad went to the bosses and pleaded with them not to get rid of this young lad, as he was just starting out in life with a young family and instead offered to take the redundancy himself, saying that he will teach him all he knows before he leaves.
The bosses agreed and my Grandad did as he promised, making sure the young lad was fully trained and ready to step into his shoes.
There's a part in Rocky 4 where Paulie says to Rocky that if he could step outside himself and be someone else, he'd want to be Rocky. I once said something similar to my Grandad at a family get together, but regardless of the fact that I'd heard it in movie, that's how I felt and still feel about him and I absolutely meant it and he was genuinely touched - he sadly passed away a few years later in 2004, but I'm so glad I got the chance to tell him that.
This remembrance Day, I'll be thinking of my Grandad and the friend he lost on board HMS Offa.
Lest we forget.
