Happy September everyone, and welcome back to Edgeley Park for what is only the second home Saturday fixture of the season. With Sandy currently holidaying in Wales, it falls to me to write these notes - although the County Heaven double-act will be back in action next time!
Today’s opponents, from the ‘City of Perspiring Dreams’, sit just two places and one point above the Hatters, and, like us, have seen their form stutter a little recently, so it promises to be an intriguing contest. To add to the interest, Tom Elliott, who needs no introduction to County fans, will spearhead the Cambridge attack, and has so far done so with such impressive effect that he is among the leading BSP goal-scorers. We will always be thankful to Tom for the part he played in assisting the County recovery last season, but it goes without saying that we will keep the closest of tabs on him today!
Speaking of former County players, it has been pleasing to see that Jordan Rose is turning in excellent performances for AFC Telford - even though one of these happened to be for our own visit to the New Bucks Head on Bank Holiday Monday! The point that we gained there, however, was well earned and gratefully received following the disappointment of the earlier Friday night defeat at home to an impressive Gateshead side.
Two players - namely, Carl Piergianni and Cameron Darkwah - were due to move on from SK3 ahead of today’s match. Both were popular among many County Heaveners, and played their part in helping to steer the club clear of trouble last term. We wish ‘Pidge’ and ‘Cam’ all the best for the future.
On County Heaven itself, the first month of Down Under Hatter’s Predictions League has now come to an end. Yours truly had been doing quite well with this whilst on holiday and blindly banking from a distance on home victories all round. As soon as I had returned, however, and started to attempt uneducated guesses about the results, my form slumped dramatically! A lesson learned there, I think...
As part of the same competition, I did manage to estimate the attendance for the Gateshead game as closely as was possible without being correct. And, as Downy pointed out, I would have been spot on had I stayed at home! Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing?
Enjoy the game.
