not as enjoyable as saturday's first half (the second got a bit disjointed with the subs), and i wasn't concentrating quite as hard because there were four of us rather than me being on my todd...and the opposition was higher level, and further into their pre-season than us...
...so we lost, and deservedly; but we weren't wretched or anything. hurst, for the second time in two pre-season games showed exactly why he's neil young's 'chosen one' from last season, with a string of excellent blocks and saves.
great to see baggie notch again (and i see he's snuck ahead on our sponsor poll). that's two high quality goals now. we should already have been behind when he collected a pass from left to right across the box from (i think) collie, cut in and hit it across the 'keeper into the far corner. he'd also already hit the side netting at that point.
we started with a slightly changed side; churchman for robinson, ledsham for evans, garvin for...umm... and looked to be playing a back three, with morton inside at centre back. apart from lees i can't think who the other centre back was...it was probably roberts, but he did also get quite far forward a few times. were we playing a 3 or did i just dream it? glenn rule certainly appeared to be at right wing back a lot, and danny morton didn't get forward like he did on saturday. roberts was furthest forward on a couple of occasions, but also less than on saturday.
county were far more pressed to contain airbus than they had been clitheroe, and given that tonight's opponents have already played a two-legged la-de-da european tie, you'd expect them to be further on than us.
bit more of a disjointed game - lots of subs but they had less effect on the cohesion of the game than on saturday because it was already more disjointed.
airbus equalised from an excellent direct free kick which swung away from hurst and into the corner. their second was a close in finish. didn't really see as much from the players as individuals tonight, apart from hurst who was excellent again, baggie, who had plenty of direct running in him, and collie, who has surprised me by being stronger and more confident than i expected. he held the ball up and laid it off well several times in the first half. i like the look of him.
