True democracy does indeed allow people to change their mind however we don't have anything like true democracy in this country. In fact we have nothing beyond a very pale imitation of it. The FPTP system means that the votes of people in so called "swing" constituencies, i.e ones where no party has a clear and consistent majority are the only constituencies of any value to the main parties. This means that something in the region 60-62% of all votes cast at a General Election are meaningless and have no bearing on the result of the election. It's precisely this democratic deficit that has been a contributory factor in the Brexit decision. I've absolutely no sympathy with the views of Nigel Farage however, a lot of people do. Had he been elected to parliament his voice would have been heard and the entire country would have been witness to the utter vacuity of his arguments in much the same way that the last two days have given Johnson the opportunity to demonstrate to us all the shallow bully behind the big ego. All mature democracies generally follow the same rules with regards to referenda. They require a 75% turnout and a 66% positive vote because that way as near as dammit 50% of the electorate have expressed a wish to change, it's beyond any doubt. The referendum of 2016 failed on both counts. The referendum that Parliament voted to have was a non-binding, advisory only referendum with no legal validity at all. When you add the illegal funding to that you get the reason why a senior judge recently said that had the referendum had any legal validity the result would have been kicked out by a court. The reason we are where we are is because the majority of people assumed that remain would win, not least the two upper-class Tory f**kwits who "masterminded" it, so the necessary safeguards were ignored. Not only did it fail to take into account the sheer bloody incompetence of Cameron and Osbourne, it also failed to take account of the fact that the swivel-eyed nut-jobs on the extreme fringes of the Tory Party would be able to hold the then Prime Minister hostage to her principle concern, namely the salvation of the Tory Party, come what may. As a result, what started out as a petty squabble amongst extreme right-wing nutters escalated into open civil war which has now been successfully exported to the rest of Europe at a cost of billions £'s. We're also left with a PM who is serious danger of making May look statesmanlike who in turn is being led by an unelected advisor hell-bent on using the entire country as one huge experiment in imposing his will and his idea's on the rest of us safe in the knowledge that when it all turns to sh*t "I'm alright Jack". The best service Johnson could do this country right now would be to f*** right off, find a ditch, lie down in it and die. That way he need be no more than a footnote in history rather than the PM who oversaw the break-up of the Union and the destruction of large parts of the economy.

have I slipped into an alternate timeline at some point in the past? yeah. and i think it's a victorian steampunk one in which the sun will never set on britain's glorious empire, and the working class are right where they should be - in the gin houses or workhouses. that c*** should get a monacle - it's the only thing that'll make him look any more like some mill owning, maid raping, darkie hating, polo playing toff w**ker from a thankfully bygone age.

This could go in irrational likes but this is a good fit for it too!
kakistocracy. "A system of government run by the worst, least qualified and most unscrupulous citizens". First coined in the 17th century.
Greek derivation: kakistos meaning the worst

with amber rudd gone as well, i'm hoping that within a couple of months time, there will be no parliamentary tory party left at all, or at least that a tiny remnant of it is standing back to back in a circle, holding the opposition off with chairs...

Best quote from the weekend........
Marina Hyde writing in the Guardian "Boris Johnson resembles a shaved Honey Monster dressed for his first court appearance".
Some imagination.

And providing yet another example of the kind of vicious anti foreigner atmosphere these tw##s are stirring, the RNLI are reporting that a number of people making donations to the service they provide are taking to Twitter to announce that they are no longer prepared to donate to an organisation that spends 2 percent of its budget abroad...2 oercent...frequently teaching children how to swim. Not only is it now perfect normal to be a bigoted, racist piece of sh*t, it's become normal to advertise it in public!

f***ing hell. angry at the lifeboat service. 'one fiftieth of my donation goes to teaching refugees how to swim to italy' intolerant much? 'first they came for the communists, and i did not speak out - because i was not a communist...' i'm liking the atmosphere less and less.

This is one of the factors in me starting a new life in the sun. Brexit has allowed so many of these people to crawl out from underneath the rocks and out of the dark shadowy corners. They now feel that they have a ‘voice’ and I do not like their tone one bit. I had a colleague ask me before the Euro election, which party can I vote for that will keep us in Europe but keep all the foreigners out! I was very professional and suggested she voted green (as she would have no idea of any of their policies)
I thought we had moved on as a nation but apparently not.

One wonders how she would react in the event of an emergency and the only Doctor on hand to treat her was an immigrant. Presumably she would heroically save the NHS a fortune and let nature take its course, hope at least springs eternal!

How's it going with your work visa? From what I've read, Brexit is making it harder for Brits to work in Europe.

The school haven’t mentioned it but when I asked a different school during interview earlier in the year (before the March deadline) they said it wouldn’t be a problem as the school would ‘sponsor me’. If brexit all goes pear shaped I shall use my mother’s Irish passport and claim dual nationality. Begorrah oí will so oi will!

Short of saying Boris lied to the Queen, Lady Hale and all 11 Supreme Judges play a blinder.
Parliament back tomorrow ? Brexit delayed again ? Boris to "consider his position ?".
Who needs Coronation Street when the House of Commons is the best soap on TV at the moment ?
