For a number of us, he was undoubtedly THE voice of sport in our formative years.
An utterly brilliant professional, who really knew his stuff - and a thoroughly nice guy, too. Once met him during filming of A Question of Sport, and it was obvious that he knew far, far more about the subject-matter than those who had set the teasers!
He has left us some timeless commentary, and some memorable quotes (some of them unintentional, but classics all the same!).
RIP.

That was Motty I think, JD, there was also a Snooker one too, which I think might have been Whispering Ted Lowe. I'm open to correction on both though, mate.

Didn't he turn out for County's reserve side a few times? Not sure how many times, Fudgie - but, yes, he did don a County shirt at least once. The story goes that, as a young editor of the Wilmslow Alderley Express, he turned up to report on a reserves game. The team was short on numbers, and he was roped into playing!
