had a thing for warm jets in the mid-nineties. some good, sci-fi singles and some great b-sides. alright live too.
saw ward, m in manchester (in a switch of mood in the evening after i'd watched county in the afternoon) before he started arseing about with zooey deschanel. not that fussed about some of his other stuff, but the 'end of amnesia' album is whispered, witchy indie-folk. great for drifting off to sleep with its spectral sound.
wilco are one of the bands rising from the ashes of uncle tupelo (see week 'u'). jeff tweedy is a very classic songwriter, and that makes his band's alternative pop/rock sound like a distillation of americana. their 'summerteeth' album is a guitar-pop classic, and i've liked bits and bobs since. their film-of-making-a-record 'i am trying to break your heart' was very interesting too.
wolf parade weren't stayers for me, but a few years ago i got into their 'apologies to the queen mary' album, and particularly obsessed with the desperate 'i'll believe in anything'.
wheat for 'w' though. first album 'medeiros' came in a tin box which is slightly rusty now, and contained lots of beautiful tunes slightly blurred (to great effect) by being a little lo-fi. 'soft polluted blacks' and 'summer' remain faves. the next album 'hope and adams' continued in a similar vein, stand out tracks 'roll the road' and another obsession of the time 'don't i hold you', which they'd already half played when i arrived the only time i saw them live, to my great disappointment. i kind of gave up after that but -gah- i notice there's more stuff...including a reissue of those first two albums with a bonus demo/offcut disc. CHUMS isn't that great for my bank account, i have noted.

oh, and the walkmen as well, primarily for the fabulous '138th street' (another obsession for a while). really ought to give the 'bows and arrows' album it's on more of a listen cos it sounds pretty good.

Being a fan of the 80's...
John Waite Wet Wet Wet Paul Weller Steve Winwood Kim Wilde Waterboys Wham Wilson Phillips
Others Include...
Rufus Wainwrght Dionne Warwick Was not Was Westlife Wheatus The White Stripes Wild Cherry Denice Williams Robbie Williams Bill Withers Wizzard Womack and Womack Stevie Wonder
Tough one for me because I've had Stevie Wonder's superstition and Wild Cherry's Play that funky music as my ring tones over the last couple of years but I think i'm just going to go with Stevie Wonder this time. My favourite song being Sir Duke but a special mention to the tribute he did to Ray Charles at the concert held after his death when he did "I gotta woman" The guy is just class.
