Ok, I've pondered...
A few bands worthy of mention, on the strength of one great song apiece:
- the trancey Van Basten, with King Of The Death Posture;
- the grungey-indie Veruca Salt, with Seether;
- the unbelievably short-lived Vibes, with their utterly brilliant garage-take on I'm In Pittsburgh (And It's Rainin');
- the Belgian poppy Vive Le Fete, with Noir Desir; and
- the riot grrrly Voodoo Queens, with Supermodel Superficial.
The Vaselines deserve a shout-out for their more extensive body of work - quite rightly lauded by Nirvana, who covered three songs by the Scottish duo - and for their wistful cover of Divine's You Think You're A Man.
But, for all this, there can only be one winner... The Velvet Underground have quite simply had more influence than any other act ever on the best combos dominating my collection and continuing tastes. The anecdote about not many people buying the debut album, but everyone who did going on to form a band, has become a tad hackneyed over the years... but it's still one heck of a testimony!

Some very good bands this week – more than I expected when I surveyed my music collection, especially US indie rock
Versus – check out Blade of Grass or Raining
Very Secretary – standing in the shade is just dreamy.
Velvet Crush – remind me of Teenage Fanclub – both in the sound and in the way they started off quite raw with Teenage Symphonies to God and mellowed out with the more, erm velvety Soft Sounds.
The Velvet Teen – Singer sounds a bit like Jeff Buckley and the band sounds like Radiohead at times – not a bad thing in this instance!
A nod to Violent Femmes and Veruca Salt, as Macc has already mentioned
A mention also for Voice of the Beehive – perfect music for long summer days. Are they still cool, or a guilty pleasure?
But, it’s the other ‘velvet’ band that gets my vote: The Velvet Underground. Sunday Morning is one of my favourite ever songs. I picked up a picture disc vinyl of The Velvet Underground and Nico last year – still very pleased with my purchase!

Just as Smokey Robinson was/is in another firmament, so is Luther Vandross, who was a sad loss. Appropriately one of his songs was Dance with my Father, and mine died 12 years ago today. I miss them both.

I Really Didn't Mean It Stop Never Too Much Give Me The Reason

Bobby Vee had a golden period in the early sixties but, in truth, it was probably more about the songs than his performance so this old guy's vote goes to the original Jersey Boy. The hits CD of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons is actually a double and they did my favourite version of I've Got You Under My Skin.

Being a fan of the 80's...
The Vapors Suzanne Vega Visage Van Halen
Others include...
Vampire Weekend Vanilla Ice Velvet Underground Vengaboys The Verve The Village People
Tough one for me this week as I like a few of the above artists. But I think for being know for providing the music for one of my favourite all time trilogy's Back to the future films, Just beating Vangelis to the top spot is Van Halen.
