Being a fan of the 80's...
U2 UB40 Ultravox The Undertones
Others include
Uncle Kracker Underworld Usher Union J
Not much choice this week and I'd never vote for UB40 as the lead singers voice is awful and sounds like he' s moaning to music most of the time. If you want to hear Red Red Wine sung properly, listen to Neil Diamond's version.
So with this weeks list meaning nothing to me i'll go for oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh Ultravox!!

Ultravox look like nicking it, with a few hours left on the clock.
Any final votes? I'll call time around 1pm.

Doesn't look too hopeful for my band of choice this time around - but, to be honest, I don't mind greatly. Ultravox are very worthy, and, more to the point, U2, despite my fears a week ago that they would run away with it, haven't attracted any significant support.
It's not that I dislike U2. Their very early, pre-bombast recordings were great, and, in The Unforgettable Fire and Achtung Baby, they have put together a couple of decent albums. But if they were chocolate drops, they would eat themselves. And, more to the point, a win for them under CHUMS would have led to my credibility being seriously questioned by Teenage Maccette - to whom, to date (and so she says), I have given but one piece of essential, fatherly life-advice:
Me: Right, it's time for us to talk seriously about music.
Maccette: Ok, Daddy.
Me: Never, ever forget that what you choose to listen to is up to you, and not anyone else. (Goes on, inevitably, to cite ABBA as an example of a band it's ok to like...)
Maccette: Ok, Daddy.
Me: And, remember, it's not enough to know that U2 are crap. You've got to know WHY they're crap.
Maccette: Ok, Daddy.
She was four at the time. And, as an aspiring music journalist now, still remembers...!

Hopefully she has more taste than Daddy, and disregarded ABBA many years ago.
Ultravox take the title and will join the album shortly.

Me: And, remember, it's not enough to know that U2 are crap. You've got to know WHY they're crap. exactly, macca. there are a good few U2 songs i really like, but they are the opposition. it is that simple. it's encouraged me to re-watch the 'it might get loud' documentary as the full thing is on youtube. the edge has got an edge sound, and it's quite a good one; but he just has nothing in his box to compare to the big dirty riff of jack's 'seven nation army' or jimmy's mighty 'kashmir' (although neither are artists i'm particularly interested in). for all the flag waving posturing and bellowing, the politicking and those good songs i've always found U2 inauthentic. authenticity is not generally a quality i'm bothered about considering with bands, but the lack of it is the sneaking damage in the heart of the U2 machine.

And in Fool the World, when you get to the chapter when the Pixies supported U2, you'll hate them even more.

I was thinking the same thing. I initially thought U2, but then for me, they only had one great album - The Unforgettable Fire - The rest are complete tosh! Self indulgent egotistic claptrap! And that includes the early ones, Boy and War. What was Zooropa about!
