Sorry, but Tears For Fears might have been ok, but come on, look at the quality of this collection so far. We really don't want Tears for Fears on this CD, do we?... gazza, might be time now to eat all your words, swallow your pride... and admit the possibility that Tears for Fears will end up on this record! Surely there are more members of the Teenage Fanclub erm, fanclub out there?

Well, I'm one, as you know, Eppers...
And, in the circumstances, I'd be persuaded to break out of my current state of T Rextasy for the greater good of the album. Teenage Fanclub for me, too, Sandy!
Exile - where are you?!

Exile - where are you?! Yay - good man! A discerning choice, rather than being bandwagonesque, of course I suspect I may be returing the favour in Week U with The Undertones to keep St. Bono off the album!

Right, despite all that waffle, I think the only votes I need to update are countyfan's and a change for Maccy. So, I believe it to now be:
Tears for Fears 2 Teenage Fanclub 2 Talking Heads 1 Talk Talk 1 Taylor, James 1 Temptations, The 1
Tenacious D 1 Thin Lizzy 1 Traffic 1 Travis 1

remember me?!? ok. i'll give a quick namecheck to trembling blue stars, with their field mice alumni; but they were never an essential. the wonderfully named tobin sprout provided harmonies, some guitars, and a portion of the songwriting for the imperious period (1993-96) of guided by voices, although his solo stuff feels a little weak. i liked 'the hurting' a lot in '82 or '83 (i bought the 'mad world' single at the same time as bauhaus' 'ziggy stardust' cover. dunno why i have that specific memory - possibly so i could later drop it as a micro-anecdote demonstrating my ecleticism even as a twelve year old). i also still love 'head over heels', but i'm not voting TFF. TFC? we'll see... not well versed in talking heads, but obviously 'once in a lifetime' is a brilliant thing. i saw post-rock titans tortoise in the late nineties with isotope 217. the most impressed i've ever been by an instrumental concern (not blown away by an early-ish mogwai gig). some of their stuff ('djed', the springheel jack mix of 'galapagos') was laid back but arse-clenching math-funk, some of it was incredibly pretty, but there was also a fair proportion of merely dull. the twilight sad are one of three jockanese entries for me this week. 'cold days from the birdhouse' off their 2007 debut is atmospheric and anthemic, and ramps up the guitars thrillingly into a seething cloud halfway through. their album from 2013 'no one can ever know' is very different but pretty good too. the thermals are a bit samey energetic indie-punk, but in 'no culture icons' they have a great two minutes, if coupled with a spectacularly bad video. telstar ponies made a couple of albums in the mid-nineties, and then disappeared. another band of caledonians, 'not even starcrossed' is full of open spaces and bruising guitars, and elsewhere they're obviously influenced by krautrock, but sound like a more malign jesus and mary chain. think i need to play them again in my car, i've almost forgotten. the twilight singers - what greg dulli did after afghan whigs. he has a great roar of a voice that rises up out of a conversational breathiness and made them a good live proposition. one of my favourite live covers ever was him testifying his way through outkast's 'hey ya', voice shredded by the end. but, maccy and eps; you've probably clarified my thoughts here. i'd read or heard in early 1991 that teenage fanclub were a bit like dinosaur jr. it was enough for me, so i eagerly watched them do 'everything flows' on snubtv before going out for 'a catholic education'. yeah, there were some highlights, including a number on 'bandwagonesque' ('starsign', 'alcoholiday' et al), but the grottiness of 'a catholic education' is still my favourite. i gave up on them pretty quickly (saw them in 1996 with cornershop and it was polite and dull), but in that initial rush, with the 'god knows it's true/so far gone' a/b double whammy and especially that divine 'everything flows', i loved them for a while. i normally lurk towards the back at gigs, but watching them in the summer of 1991 at sheffield leadmill, i was right at the front and had to hang on to the thick cables snaking their way from the band's monitors in order not to be dragged under. such polite fellas too. i'll add my name to their fanclub please, sandy.

Just for that, exile, we'll let you back into our indie gang... and say no more about the Queen business ! Good shout on The Twilight Sad, too. The album that they brought out just before Christmas - Nobody Wants To Be Here & Nobody Wants To Leave - is true to form, and worth a listen, if you haven't heard it as yet.

Good choice, that man! I've not listened to A Catholic Education for ages, always preferring The King and Bandwagonesque. Time to dig it out, I think. Some bands I've not heard off in your shortlist, ars, so time to check those out, too. Looks like Teenage Fanclub might have sneaked it at the end, giving the CD a bit more of a modern feel

Talk Talk. Distinctive sound. Distinctive voice. Refusal to conform to the wishes of record companies preferring to make the music that THEY wanted.
A video like this over an argument about lip-synching:
Talk Talk - It's My Life (UK Version):
I rest my case.

Sorry Downy, but Teenage Fanclub appear to have nicked it. Wouldn't have been my choice, but it saves me having to use my casting vote so, for that, I'm happy.
Entry, and Week U, to follow
