1. REM 2. Lou Reed
Would have been 3. Roxy Music but Ferry is heavily into the hunt scene so a big 'no thanks'

For me there is one name who is miles ahead.
Smokey Robinson.
A writer of over 3,000 songs, many for himself (many co-written) such as Tears of a Clown, The Tracks Of My Tears, etc etc etc, plus the writer of many for others, such as My Girl, My Guy, and so on. Bob Dylan once described him as "America's Greatest Living Poet."
I've had the pleasure of seeing him live twice, and even in his latter years he was fantastic, still with a great voice.
The man is a god with a God given talent. Quite apt that his long time backing group was The Miracles.

Got to be quick with this, before setting off for my favourite of all the Ferribies, and my pace of typing isn't all that, so...
How appropriate, then, that my vote should go to the Ramones. Punk on speed. Every band member with the same surname. Totally rock 'n' roll. A pity, really, that their only big hit was a sugary, slowie cover of Baby I Love You - but their influence prior to that was immense.
Just enough time to give honorary mentions to an earlier Phil Spector act, the Ronettes, as well as to the Ruts (and Ruts DC), the Redskins and the Raincoats. Early Roxy Music were fab, too, but a bit too lounge-lizardy after Eno left and they lost their innovative cutting-edge.
And, fittingly, I'm done in under two minutes. Gabba Gabba Hey!

Woops!
How did I forget to give a shout out for the brilliant Otis Redding.
Now rectified.

I was never a 'sweat and stutter' (that would be soul music) fan but Otis was one of my wife's favourites and I chose 'My Girl' as the play-out music at her funeral. Good call, sirrog.

i liked ride back in the day and rachel's instrumental 'music for egon schiele' was another thing i loved in the mid-nineties.
up against the powerhouses of otis and smokey though? 'dock of the bay' is one of the most brilliantly transporting songs, from the bass washing in at the start, to the (de la soul sampled) whistling at the end. the 'tears' songs and 'i second that emotion' from smokey are also awesome, but i'm going otis redding this week.

Surprisingly few R’s for me to roll this week…
Martin Rebelski – glorious keyboards and samples to create perfect music for chilling out
The Real People – the almost perfect 90’s indie band. Window Pane is one of the soundtracks of my youth. They are also credited with recording Oasis’ first demo tape which led to their first record deal. (I’ll leave you decide if that is a positive influence on the world of music, or not)
A difficult choice between 2 for me this week:
Bic Runga – New Zealander who has made some of my favourite ever songs. Beautiful Collision is a just sublime
Ride – Brilliant songs, outstanding live. Nowhere and Going Blank Again were played to within an inch of their life in my school and college days. The EPs are brilliant and beautifully made. They made one album too many in Tarantula, but I’ll forgive them that. Coming Up For Air was an EP they recorded in 2002 for a Channel 4 programme. Only 1000 were made. It’s top of my wish list but I ain’t paying £70 to get it from Japan!
Two completely different sounds, so a tough choice; but I’ll go with Bic Runga

Update:
REM 3 Roxy Music 2 Ramones, The 1 Rea, Chris 1 Redding, Otis 1 Richie, Lionel 1 Robinson, Smokey 1 Runga, Bic 1
If ceefer could clarify who his vote is going for, I'll add it on. I'm assuming it's REM as they were named first, but will await clarification before adding the vote on.

Executive decision time. Since Weeks R and S are likely to be our busiest, I'll call time on this one on Wednesday, and start S then to run until a week on Friday when we'll return to one week turnarounds.
Still waiting on clarification from ceefer as to his vote.

Come on ceefer, lad!
The biggest surprise, given the bands on the CD so far, is not one vote for the Rolling Stones

Just wait until we get onto Week S, though. My own short-list can't yet drop below double figures!

Indeed Maccy, I'm stuggling to get it down to 5 for my suggested shortlist. Still, all will be revealed shortly.
In the meantime, regardless of ceefer's mystery vote (which I'm still assuming is for REM) it is REM who win anyway and join some illustrious company on the album.
Entry to follow, before we start the unenviable task of selecting a 'S' winner.
