Friday 10am - Rolvsoy IF vs Blackpool Senior Seasiders Walking Football Club
Thank you to our marvelous hosts from Norway for a fabulous morning. The "youngsters" were excellent ambassadors for their club and country welcoming a bunch of geriatric footballers to their training camp for a demonstration of the beautiful art of Walking Football.
Guest appearances from Fudge, Macca, my brother in law (51) and Andy (son of our midfielder 46) certainly lowered the average of the squad of 11 to somewhere in the region of 60 !!! Given the age difference and varying athletic builds of the teams it looked like a blood bath was on the cards.
However, the Senior Seasiders surprised the opposition early on with some intricate footwork and general all round enthusiasm. A lead was always on the cards and a cascade of goals was only stemmed by some brilliant Viking goalkeeping. Rolvsoy, though, quickly came up to speed and used their youth, accuracy and control to fight back into the game. 2-2 at the end of the first 15 minutes, 5-5 at the completion of the second session and a deserved 7-7 final score (with Jarkko scoring the last goal as a guest for the Blackpool side) after 45 minutes of very competitive football.
So, to a nail biting penalty shoot out. With the help of an in-off the post score from Fudge, a mis-hit penalty that just crept over the line, and 3 saves by yours truly, a 3-2 winning margin was gained by the only team in Blackpool that can win matches.
Photographs taken (to appear later) momentoes exchanged and many friends made. The Rolvsoy lads now appreciate that the glorious game can be played well into later life - another 40+ years for some of them !!
Thanks again Jarkko and Rolvsoy for making some old people feel very happy. Good luck with the rest of the tour and season ahead.
And............ well done to the honorary Seasiders (Fudge's international transfer clearance came through as the eclipse waned). No one embarrassed, no one injured and no one with hurt pride.
