New Order and Nirvana could well be slugging this one out - although, arguably, neither of them might have first emerged in quite the way that they did, had it not been for the New York Dolls and their bridging of the glam-punk gap.
NYD were flash, they lived the rock-n-roll lifestyle, and the songs on their classic, self-titled debut album - check out Personality Crisis and Trash, in particular - provided perfect blueprints for the musical revolution of which the 1970s were so direly in need.
The band's classic line-up soon imploded in a cocktail of drugs and fallings-out, and, although NYD did later reform, only two members from the time of their debut are still alive... let alone having any continued involvement. A short lifetime, but an everlasting legacy.

Can't decide between Randy Newman & Harry Nilsson, so I'll go with New Order.

Sticking with my own collection gives me Nazareth, Natural Acoustic Band, Laura Nyro and Stevie Nicks. Really tempted by Laura Nyro but going with Stevie Nicks.

Got to be New Order, but special mention for Harry Nilsson, 'Everybody's Talkin' is one of my all-time favourite songs.

Tough. New Order are superb and local. Stevie Nicks is excellent as is Gary Numan. Not keen on Notorius BIG, nor Nickelback. Harry Nilson was good though.
Hmmmmm
I am going for
New Order.

'are friends electric?' and 'cars' especially have been extremely influential, and i liked the alien-ness of gary numan in about 1980.
the national write modern rock songs often about doomed romances. the lyrics are either brilliant or occasionally a little gauche. saw them in leeds in about 2005 and loved all their early stuff ('cherry tree', 'sad songs for dirty lovers', 'alligator') which seemed full of vim and drive. have lost interest a little since as i can't quite escape the notion that this is exactly the kind of stuff that a musically literate 44 year old is supposed to like!
the notwist. german electro-guitar hybrid. their 'neon golden' album is fab. they have that human voice in the heart of the machine thing that new order do, without being particularly like new order.
joanna newsom. child-voiced fairy harpist singing fantastical but beautifully literate lyrics. her voice has actually changed a bit now after some nodules on her vocal chords, but i liked the earlier incarnation more, even though the current is pretty good too. an incredible talent, if not everybody's cup of tea.
new order a bit obviously. i haven't bought anything since 'republic' (other than electronic albums), but i don't need to for them to be my 'n'. 'ceremony' was my favourite song ever for years when i was younger, and the b-side (and other final legacy of joy division) 'in a lonely place' is atmospherically brilliant too. 'temptation' is wonderful, even if none of the recorded versions ever quite captured its perfection. i also still love early single 'procession'.
'power, corruption and lies' is one of my favourite albums. ordered the LP version from my local record shop in buxton, and when it arrived it was enigmatic to say the least. the cover (of a basket of roses) doesn't feature the band or album name, except in a series of small coloured blocks which are peter saville's code for band and album name. typical of factory's obtuse artfulness. the album contains the first throes of 'blue monday' in '5 8 6', and some of my favourite new order in 'age of consent', 'the village', and especially the stately 'your silent face' and the bright, up, 'leave me alone' closing the album. some great stuff on there, and i will also give a quick shout out to the b-side to 'thieves like us', the very lovely 'lonesome tonight'. they seem like absolute cocks a lot of the time, but they're one of the few bands where it feels like their music is in my DNA, i've been listening to them for so long.

There were quite a few bandwagon-esque indie bands in the 90's: New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Northern Uproar and Northside. Mad-chester trendy at the time, but have not aged well at all
New Young Pony Club are a good listen and easy on the eye
No. 2 have good tunes but an unfortunate name
One album, one hit wonder, New Radicals should have made more
It seems like New Order have this wrapped up already, but my vote goes to Ned's Atomic Dustbin. The band provided the soundtrack to a large part of my college years. Brilliant band, brilliant sound (unusually, they have 2 bass players). God Fodder still ranks as one of my favourite albums of all time. Happy memories, happy days.
