Some special K's
Kingmaker - Indie band that probably should have done better than they did Kinky Machine - Another mid-90's band that should have achieved better things. My favourite band at one point Kenickie - from sunny Sunderland, lead singer one Lauren Laverne Ben E King - saw him play at the Blue Note, New York. He is such a cool man! Smokin' Joe Frazier was in the audience that night and he went up on stage towards the end of the set. He was wearing a white suit and white trilby - he even out-cooled Ben!
But I'm moving away form my traditional Indie roots this week and going for Canadian jazz singer Diana Krall. A beautiful voice and beautiful music - perfect for chilling out along with a glass of 14 year old Oban on ice at the end of a stressful week.

One of the great debut albums, with a great album sleeve too.

Not to mention the more modern classic 'Come Dancing', another piece of genius storytelling from Ray Davies. The fact he's still not been elevated to 'Sir Ray Davies' absolutely defies belief. yeah - 'come dancing' was one of my host! bit bizarre that they popped up with it in the eighties and suddenly propelled themselves back into the upper reaches of the US charts. it's weird how they've never bitten as one of my favourite bands because it really is just great tune after great tune. i also love 'death of a clown' (although the single was billed as being dave davies solo). it is brilliantly ramshackle!

Kenickie - from sunny Sunderland, lead singer one Lauren Laverne forgot kenickie. first band i saw at the leeds cockpit. they were just kids and their songs had a brittle brilliance. the first album in particular was lovely.

At The Club, wasn't it, exile? Definitely a classic album. And it boasted a couple of my all-time fave tracks in Punka and Come Out 2 Nite.
But, for me, this has got to be the week of The Kinks. A good few of their best songs have already been mentioned, but, more than anything else, I absolutely love the way in which they seem to capture the life and culture of the day and bottle it up for posterity - still to be enjoyed now by those who were around at the time, and by those who weren't but wonder what it was like.
Not that they were simply '60s music hall story-tellers, with a sprinkling of folk whimsy, mind. Throw in their unwitting invention of heavy metal, through the release of You Really Got Me, as well as the creative tension between the Davies brothers that made Noel's and Liam's later spats look like kindergarten capers, and you have a proper rock group. A hugely influential one, too... as our winners of Week J testified by covering David Watts.
Kinda kool, all told.

Brilliant post, Maccy, especially your point regarding 'posterity'. Their songs are like musical time capsules.

Their songs are like musical time capsules. Spot on, gazza. And, in the most positive sense, nostalgic comfort blankets !

Looks like an easy winner this week and the Kinks almost got my vote as well but, as much for her songwriting as for her own recordings, I'll go for Carole King. Tapestry is, of course, her classic album but there are so many songs recorded by other artists (Goin' Back, Halfway To Paradise, Take Good Care Of My Baby etc) that take me back to a good time.

At The Club, wasn't it, exile? Definitely a classic album. And it boasted a couple of my all-time fave tracks in Punka and Come Out 2 Nite. that's the one macca. there was a winning vulnerability to stuff like 'when i was made' and 'millionaire sweeper'. i was a bit cynical about them at first - seemed like music press hype...but then i played it to death!

Update:
The Kinks 6 Kaiser Chiefs 1 Killers, The 1 King, BB 1 King, Carole 1 KLF, The 1 Krall, Diana 1
I'll let this one run until Friday (not that it seems I need to!) even though it started a day early so we're back onto Friday change-overs.

Oh, tough choice. Another Option is King with their coloured Doc Martins. But then again the Kinks were fantastic, as are the Kaiser Chiefs, Diana Krall, Kid Creole, Kraftwerk.....
I am going to choose
The Kinks. Legends.
