Interesting piece about the making of the best Word Cup anthem ever (but 30 years ago... honestly, I ask you! ), as well as England's associated showing in Italia '90: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52754501

Interesting piece about the making of the best Word Cup anthem ever (but 30 years ago... honestly, I ask you! ), as well as England's associated showing in Italia '90: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52754501An excellent piece. That song and Pavarotti's 'Nessun Dorma' will always take me back to that incredible Summer, when for the first and only time in my life, I had bought all three England shirts - Home, away and third choice! I went to Majorca in the August after the World Cup and there were England shirts absolutely everywhere, it really did lift the whole country and brought the pride back to every England fan. The press were diabolical out there, though. I even heard stories of British hacks in amongst the mixing fans in the bars and clubs trying to kick things off, just to get another hooligan story - utter scum. What I found astonishing and still do when I look back to the period leading up to that tournament, are the comments from the media regarding the quality of the squad. The likes of Shilton, Waddle, Beardsley, Lineker, Des Walker, Paul Parker, Stuart Pearce were deemed not good enough to get out of their group by those jokers - there are so-called stars in the England team today that aren't fit to lace their boots. Gazza doesn't get a mention in that lot, simply because he was a one-off, a once-in-a-generation player - but look how the media hounded him. Here we had a world class, genius talent wearing the three lions, yet the press couldn't wait to lay into him and continue to do so today. Leading up to Italia '90, I was a massive Steve Bull fan and was over the moon when he made the squad, but it was Paul Gascoigne that took Italy by storm and made us realise what a special player we finally had. In my opinion, he's the most talented player to ever pull on the shirt in my lifetime, by some considerable distance. If he'd been born in Wales, Scotland or Ireland, our media would have probably spent his entire career wishing he'd been English. All in my opinion, of course. Cheers for posting, Maccy.

Good post, Gazz-man. Obviously, Welshness precluded my getting quite so involved - but it was extremely exciting to watch England in that tournament, the players and manager were quality to a man, and I was willing the team to go all the way. It most definitely gave the game over here in general a big lift, too, and I noticed a distinctly better vibe at County's matches for the start of the 1990/91 campaign - although, of course, the weaving of Danny's magic around EP had also begun to have an effect by then!

There was most definitely a wave of optimism in the air going into that season, matey. Speaking for myself, I honestly don't think my enthusiasm would have been as high had Italia '90 not been such a great tournament for English football, as that Chesterfield thumping was still raw as hell for me going into that World Cup. It's good to know that you were getting behind us, Maccy! That silly mobile phone video aside, I was rooting for your boys in 2016, as I'd seen you miss out on USA '94 so painfully.

Anyone with insomnia or who works shifts might like to listen to BBC Radio 6 Music in the early mornings. They are re-running the excellent 25 years of Rock which has news and music for each year from 1955 to 1979 with one year a day. I catch up on the BBC Sounds app where you can check out the track listings as well. The one from early today was 1966 (a very good year for many reasons) and this is the programme summary with the rider that the last 4 tracks listed are actually not part of the programme. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04ttnjn

Check out this guy. The last one man band.
I do a more Eric Clapton style laid back version (Dylan and Joplin do a great version as well) without the vocals.

Another one I can play in a striped back way. Anyone remember the original by the Band in Easy Rider ?
This is a superb version.

I play FIFA quite a bit when there's nothing on TV, the soundtrack of which has a selection of new tunes every year, but I usually have them on mute.
This one is included in the FIFA 20 selection and, for some reason, I decided to unmute the soundtrack today and now I just can't get this song out of my head:
