Just received my ticket to see Jackson Browne next week at the Bridgewater Hall. I've been listening to his immaculate, intelligent music for most of my adult life.

been out a couple of years now, but i finally got round to watching 'made of stone' this afternoon. for those who haven't seen it, it's a shane meadows (director of stuff like 'dead mans shoes', mostly starring his mate, the excellent paddy considine) film about the stone roses and their reformation, but also uses plenty of early footage as well. i bought the album the week it came out in spring '89 and loved it, but they were never one of my absolute touchstones. i thought the film was really good though and quite joyous - captured how much the director, the fans and the band themselves (other than one walk out by reni!) themselves were buzzing from it. and come on - who doesn't want to hear them aceing 'waterfall' in practice? would highly recommend.

I'm assuming no one wants a review of the Bryan Adams gig I'm taking Mrs Sandy to tomorrow night for her birthday?!

book club/music discussion:
mainly for maccy and eps probably, but i've just read the steve hanley book, 'the big midweek' about his time in the fall. he managed 20 years, which is a pretty impressive stint in the band everyone's been in at some point. he doesn't focus on the specifics of the music much, but rather describes the rehearsal/fallout/album/fallout/tour/fallout/peel session/fallout/repeat cycle that is MES' dictatorship. it runs from '79, and marc riley, through the brix 'pop' years, and up to '99; during which time MES has gone from 'difficult' lunatic to almost avuncular, and then back to 'difficult' lunatic again. it's a litany of damaged tour buses, hypocritical behavioural 'commandments' and snidely sacked band members. i really, really enjoyed it!

Cheers for the heads-up, exile. If this is anywhere close to the deranged page-turner that is MES's own biography, it must be a classic! It's been added to my Christmas list forthwith .

i heard his bio wasn't that good...but i'm now going to look it up and probably buy it! ...i've been youtubing various fall this week while on here, on account of the book of course; so 'kicker conspiracy', 'eat y'self fitter', 'garden', 'the mixer' etc are all whirling through my brain...
steve hanley certainly isn't a literary genius, but he's a decent bloke who has spent a large amount of time in the proximity of an absolute mentallist; and that obviously makes for a very entertaining read!

The MES book is definitely worth getting, exile. It's one deliciously long rant that he probably recorded (onto a cassette tape) during a session or two at his dingiest Salford local. Unlike any other bio you will ever read, too. At no point does he brush over, or excuse himself from, anything that he has done in his life. Oh - and it's often genuinely, although perhaps not always intentionally, funny as well...

finished 'the big midweek' this afternoon. it ends rancorously as you would expect. have ordered his bio. and 'the fallen' about the many band members. probably the biggest compliment i can pay to 'the big midweek'; that i immediately wanted to know more and get different perspectives on this unique group of oddballs...

Exile-ent. Put No Xmas for John Quays and their version of Jingle Bell Rock on repeat while you read, and you're sorted for the festive season!

Sounds like it's worth checking out, ars. I've got Fool The World: The Oral History of A Band Called Pixies on my list for Santa. Gets a good write up, so I hope it's in my stocking.

let us know how it gets on - i've got that 33 1/3 book on the making of 'doolittle' (which like most of the books in that series was less interesting than i hoped), but i'll have a pop at it if you rate it.

Saw this posted on MMMB earlier, famous musicians who have lived, recorded or were born in Stockport: www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/in-your-area/listen-ultimate-stockport-playlist-featuring-8437073I knew the legend that is Terry Hall lived on Offerton somewhere in the 80s while he was with The Colourfield, my mate's Dad was a Taxi driver and picked him up once or twice. A few schoolmates used to see him regularly in the Stretford End at Old Trafford around that time too. Sad Cafe' and The Mock Turtles have been mentioned on the MMMB thread, anyone got any others?
