A few H's...
Julianna Hatfield - excellent singer song writer Haven - all the way from Cornwall, a fine indie band The Charlie Hunter Quartet - an amazing guitarist and fantastic if you fancy a bit of jazz Hurricane #1 - Andy Bell formed the band when Ride split up. Never reach the heights of Ride, but a good listen nonetheless Husker Du - a seriously underrated band in their influence. Forerunners to the likes of The Pixies, they never received the accliam they deserve
Happy Mondays - I'll mention them, but they are a band that haven't aged well. I listened to them the other day and they are bit like kids TV shows from your youth; you remember them being great, but when you see them again you realise how rubbish they actually are.
House of Love get my vote this week. They have aged well. Still as brilliant to listen today as when I got their first album on vinyl all those years ago.

i actually had a letter published in melody maker in which i complained about a live review of house of love (i was at said gig). as the gig was at hull uni and i'd given a hull address, the letters editor, david stubbs, just filled my letter with fish and sea references, making it much better. that said, HoL don't do a lot for me now, apart from maybe 'love in a car'.
good shout on 'build' c_f. i also particuarly like 'think for a minute' and 'the light is always green'.
didn't realise pj harvey had been honoured, macca! don't think i've bought anything of hers since the rollicking '50ft queenie', but when she's on 'later...' or whatever, she sounds different each time and always good.
high places have done one epic song 'from stardust to sentience' in which the beats are what sounds like a rattle of pots and pans under the pretty vocal melody. the two albums i've bought of theirs were pretty sh*t in comparison though.
my 'h' though is hood. a local-ish band to leeds, they've been producing varied stuff since the early nineties. early on you could hear sonic youth/valentines/sarah records(!) influences, but then they discovered computer software, and turned themselves into a more interesting proposition with the 'cold house' album. still primarily a guitar/bass/drums effort, they subtly used post-processing to enhance their sound, and roped in clouddead/anticon collective members for a couple of tracks. the lovely 'you're worth the whole world' is the most autumnal thing i've ever heard, and is pastoral post-rock at its best. their most recent album, from 2005, ended with a despairing trumpet on 'this is it, forever', but hopefully it isn't, even though it's been all side projects since.

If we're talking Housemartins tunes based simply on lyrics and meaning, 'Flag Day' is the best by a mile, with the album version being the more powerful.

This week I shall give you ---------- Richie Havens.
Famous for opening the 1969 Woodstock Festival. He did a 3 hour set because many of the other acts were stuck in the traffic jam getting to the site.

'let me go' by heaven 17 is brill!
as eps had mentioned the mondays, i agree that they were mainly a load of old rubbish; but the 'bummed' trio of 'wrote for luck', 'do it better', and especially the beatles/david essex(!)/sly and the family stone plagiarising 'lazyitis' were all fab. there is also a bit of football footwork in the 'lazyitis' video that i am always mesmerised by...
