There's a few. Grateful Dead, Gallagher & Lyle, Golden Earring, Grand Funk Railroad & Rory Gallagher.
However, it's the magnificent, marvellous Marvin Gaye for me.

Marvin Gaye is a great shout - and I would add the Go-betweens and the Gun Club to the 'highly commended' list, too.
But, for reasons you will appreciate when you read our programme article tomorrow, I have to go for Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.
This is the combo that really made the breakthrough for alternative Welsh-language bands, and, as they became more established, got inside our minds with a magic mix of psychedelia and alt-folk. I would stop short of inflicting on fellow Heaveners the early stuff sung solely in the Language of... erm, Heaven - but do check out If Fingers Were Xylophones, Patio Song and, at the higher commercial end, the rather wonderful Spanish Dance Troupe.
Gorky's am byth!

The Gossips are a poptastic treat. Garbage are ok, as are Shirley Manson's first Band from the 80's, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie. The less well known Geneva are well worth a listen, as are Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. and Goya Dress (another female leader singer with a fabulous voice).
My vote almost went to Gene, but Gomez pipped them at the post. Bring It On and Liquid Skin are fantastic albums.

For me there is no stand out candidate in the letter so i'll go for one of my favourite songs ever in the form of Olympian by Gene

grant lee buffalo - grant lee phillips' 90's 'lost america' troubadours, highlighted with phillips' lovely falsetto. 'fuzzy' and 'mockingbirds' are particularly gorgeous. great live too.
giant sand - howe gelb's bone dry arizona outfit, which also bore calexico.
gastr del sol - instrumental post-rockers, somewhere between tortoise and do make say think.
grandaddy - jason lytle wrote and played most of their rustic/computers oxymoron oeuvre. a couple of breakouts that you'll all have heard on tv soundtracks ('am 180', 'the crystal lake'), but miles more affecting and heartfelt when they slowed it down. another cracking live band. a record shop i frequented...a little too frequently...once gave me a grandaddy frisbee as a gift!
galaxie 500 - stately and lovely. the first two albums 'today' and 'on fire' are fantastic. their cover of jonathan richman's 'don't let our youth go to waste' is utterly magnificent. carried on after as luna and also damon & naomi.
guided by voices - gbv for me this week. i have at least twenty of their albums, probably a dozen eps; and that's barely scratching the surface. masses of other gbv albums, solo albums and other offshoots. possibly the most prolific band in history formed by robert pollard and a rotating cast. it all gets a bit too much as the albums are packed with loads of short, ramshackle tunes that occasionally sound like a lo-fi who, but are often more wonderful than that. they had a little run from about 1993 to 1996 where they could do absolutely no wrong, this period including their masterwork, 'bee thousand' twenty songs, thirty minutes; and once you got used to it, absolutely f***ing essential. my...ooh...second favourite album of all time...drunk and shambolic, they could be uneven live; but on top form were brilliant. everybody should have a GBV album, and it should probably be either 'bee thousand' or 'alien lanes'.

Margin Gaye and
Herbert Groenemeyer-largely unheard of by English audiences, but you might remember him as the journalist in Das Boot. Germany's most successful singer of the last 30 years, with albums such as Mensch and 4630 Bochum being the best-selling German language albums ever. The latter's title song, called by the same name, is sung by VFL Bochum's fans before each home game. Which artist wouldn't like that. Great lyricist (and singer), and it includes a line which means "Who wants to live in Duesseldorf ?" Bit like us taking the mick out of Burnley.
