Hard to improve on that list, Sandy, although honourable mentions for Erasure, Eurythmics and the lovely (and talented) Gloria Estefan. Eagles for me. Kings of one of my favourite genre and performers at one of the best concerts that I've been to.

Ordinarily I'd have gone with The Eagles, but since Sandy introduced me to an american group called 'Eve 6', I've not stopped playing their stuff. It's been a long time since I've played something to death, often getting bored after a few plays and never digging it out again, but Eve 6 changed that. Brilliant when I first heard them, still brilliant now. Eve 6 for me.

Difficult choice, I was a big ELP fan as a teenager (until John Peel described a later album as being a waste of electricity) I love the Eagles (as I can strum along to the majority of their stuff) but I shall have to go with:-
ELO. Brilliant performance in Hyde Park last week (still on BBC Iplayer) and looking like doing a tour now. Great match of classic pop and orchestral instruments.

Not a particularly stong week for me. There are quite a few bands I like, but none that stand out.
Earth the Californian Love Dream, The Electric Soft Parade, Electronic, Energy Orchard, Echobelly, Elastica and Eeels are all well worth a listen.
But this time I'm going classical. Edward Elgar gets my vote. I defy anyone to listen to his Cello Concerto and not be moved. It is simply the most beautiful piece of music ever written, in this poster's humble opinion.

Another of my Dads influences. I must go for ELO.
A band I'd forgotten about somewhat until they unexpectedly made an appearance in the soundtrack of NHL12 I think it was and got me hooked again!!

"mr blue sky" is one of the happiest songs ever. great tempo, great vocals. nice one jeff!
the first "electronic" album occupied a lot of space on my turntable (although actually...i bought it on tape for some bizarre reason) in my second year at college, and the single "get the message" off the next one was particularly fine. more of bernard sumner (and i suppose, johnny marr) later in the alphabet.
eels' 'electro-shock blues', largely about the suicide of his sister, and the death of his mum from cancer leaving him as the only living member of his family, while he was conceiving it/recording it, had a real weight to it. very personal vignettes about mundane horrors ('hospital food') still didn't overwhelm the lightness of touch, even though it was quite profound. it ends with him concluding 'maybe it's time to live' at the end of 'p.s. you rock my world', which remains one of the bravest and most life-affirming things i've heard. the next album was very good too; containing a genuinely moving and beautiful song called 'it's a motherf***er', wryly retitled and redubbed 'it's a monstertrucker' for the 'safe' version! saw them once in leeds in 2001 i think and they were pretty brilliant.
echo and the bunnymen's 'bring on the dancing horses' is their pinnacle for me. it sits next to the mighty wah's 'story of the blues' on a liverpool-flavoured compy i stuck together and enjoy in my car! stuff like 'silver', 'the cutter' and obviously 'the killing moon' are also excellent. ian mcculloch though, is a cock.
this week though, i'm having me some eno, brian.
'another green world', the theme music from the beeb's 'arena' is pretty and pastoral. 1/1 is a brilliant bit of spare music, but nevertheless lush. it's the best bit of 'ambient 1: music for airports'. i don't get on with all his stuff, but the winner, and a bright star in my all-time musical pantheon, is the title track from 'here come the warm jets'. just a very strange song all round, from the brilliantly repetitious main riff, to the genius of having the drums be out of time, and when the song gears up and they finally kick into time, the absolute music basic of in-time drums suddenly sounds fantastic. then the singing coming in late in the song. lyrics sound a bit religious and about repression, but just from the sounds, it is one of my 'hope' songs. as such i played it in my car coming through stocky on the M60 the day we needed to beat northampton in order for the fight to retain our league status to continue. it was my version of lucky underpants. however, the stars didn't align. brian didn't let me down. just the bastard players.

Good shout on Eno, exile.
A couple of acts get a mention from me, on the basis of one particular song each: Earth, Wind & Fire, whose Boogie Wonderland, delivered with fellow 'E'-stablemates, the Emotions, is quite simply the greatest disco smash - ever; and the Electro Hippies, who deserve plaudits for their Mega Armageddon Death - clocking in at just a single second with one cataclysmic, crashing chord.
My vote, however, goes much further back in time, and to the Everly Brothers. My Grandma was a fan of the boys, and was forever playing their hits - interspersed with those of another Country-crossover act, Jim Reeves - when I was a little Macc. I adore pretty much every one of their singles - stand-outs include Cathy's Clown, Cryin' in the Rain, Devoted to You, Temptation, The Price of Love and When Will I Be Loved? - and, as a grown-up, have discovered many more treasures on various albums.
Their legacy? Without doubt, the close harmonies. The Beatles and the Beach Boys were carefully taking notes...

Could never make my mind up about ELP, a bit too much up their own ar*es at times.
ELO are OK, but for me it's an easy decision.
It's Earth, Wind & Fire.
An absolutely superb band.
