A mention for Dexys Midnight Runners & The Doobie Brothers.
It was a close call for me, between Dire Straits and The Doors.
The Doors.

I am guessing that the two to beat this week will be The Doors and Dylan - and, to be honest, I wouldn't have a problem with either of them taking the honours... albeit with a slight preference for the short-term brilliance of the former over the longer-term decline of the latter - but shall, in any event, cast my vote as a 'Yes for Scotland': Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Delgados, lo-fi exponents extraordinaire. Under Canvas Under Wraps, Pull the Wires from the Wall and Accused of Stealing were absolutely gorgeous, while their take on ELO's Mr Blue Sky is, to these ears, a cover of great wonder - despite Mrs Macc's assessment of the vocals as 'off point'... possibly the one difference in our marriage that will never be resolved. Grab yourselves a listen to them, even if they don't attract your votes. They happen to be way post-'80s, too, Sandy ! Going back to the late '70s, honourable shout-outs for Delta 5, Dead Kennedys and The Damned (only before they turned goth, mind...).

I had rog choosing between Dire Straits and Dylan. I'll give honourable mentions to Del Amitri, Deacon Blue and Doves but I have to side with Bob Dylan. Much imitated, never matched.

Good shout with The Delgados, Macc - they are on my shortlist. Been Caught Steeling is a cracker. The Dylans, The Dukes of Stratosphear, Delicious Monster and Dubstar are the others. But it's Dodgy for me as they remind me so much of my early courting days with Mrs E. Happy days - as indeed they still are!

Maccy - I shall give The Delgados a listen tonight mate. And, side point of interest, my brother's band supported The Damned a few years back (but, sadly, post-Goth revival!)
Archie - Deacon Blue may very well have got my personal vote, but I didn't think I'd get much support!
Eppers - Dodgy's career was all-too-brief, but I've recently purchased an Indie compilation to remind me of the 90's and it's in the car at the moment. 'Staying Out for the Summer' was blasted out of the stereo only yesterday!

I tell a lie Archie, my personal vote (and even less likely to drum up support) would go to Dave Matthews Band. Few of you will have heard of them, even fewer will have given them a listen but they are, quite simply, amazing live. So much so that, when they finally came back to the UK a few years ago, I braved travelling to (by far the nearest venue to Sandbach Towers) Wolverhampton Civic Hall to see them. And, despite the unusual venue - and the fact is was 90% full of Americans studying over here - they didn't disappoint.
They're far bigger in the States (compared to Wolverhampton Civic Hall, they have played a sold-out gig in Central Park to 100,000 people) but hopefully will come back to these Shores again one day and I urge you to go see them if they're near you!
I urge you all to give 'Two Step' a listen, and if you like it, give me a shout for more recommendations!

I'll have to vote for The Doors!
Though special mention to Daz Sampson, even though he is terrible he did at least try and put County on the map and billed himself as from Stockport, not Manchester!

I think Bob Harris is a fan of Dave Matthews, isn't he? Maybe we should revisit this initial letter business. Where the name of a person is associated with a group name like 'band', 'quartet' or even 'five', any self respecting record shop would index via the surname of the main man. I'd expect to find Dave Matthews under 'M' just as I would look for Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band under 'S', Bruce Hornsby and the Range under 'H' and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds under 'G'. What do you think?

But if I were, I'd put Dave Matthews Band under D, just like in my CD collection, and every self-respecting record shop I've bought their albums from.

I'd allow Cliff Richard & the Shadows under 'C' but for a totally different reason.
What about The Artist Formally Known As Prince? Do we assume you're taking the 'P'?

He hasn't made the list, as P is a strong week, so I've circumvented that particular problem.
