i ignored your thread last night gazz as i was recording the highlights. after i'd watched them i kind of wished i'd actually sat through the ninety minutes, and i don't often say that about international friendlies. even at 2-0 down, england had created an encouraging amount of proper chances. when the germans scored, i was thinking that for all our good play, the difference was going to be their clinical excellence...and then we scored three excellent goals.
i thought we were a blunt instrument up front a couple of years ago, and now we've got goals in us. i may well be getting carried away, but i can actually imagine england going out of a tournament and not being angry about their performances. that would be a refreshing change...

Sadly I can't see a back four containing Smalling, Cahill or Carrick holding out against quality attackers at the Euros.
we may have to score 3 or 4 in every game to get away with that defence.
Having said that I thoroughly enjoyed watching an England team play without fear, create from midfield and operate with two overlapping full backs with pace and the ability to deliver a half decent ball into the box.
The future is young (the future is Rooneyless).

Hodgson appears to believe that Cahill is better than Jagielka, I'm not seeing it myself.
The Everton number 6 is not perfect, but he's a better all round defender in my opinion.

I think I heard something about Hodgson looking to give most of the squad a start in the 2 friendlies. As they've played together regularly, you'd think that it might be Jagielka and Stones against the Dutch. For all the stick he's had, Hodgson has brought through young players and given chances to some from less fashionable clubs. He has a major headache in that some of the players that he would like to take are still on their way back from injury and in a few cases he's going to have to choose between reliable and fit or class and injury prone. I hope he'll get the chance to take Wilshere because he's streets ahead of the likes of Henderson, Milner and Delph. Delph, Shaw, Walcott, Sturridge, Sterling and even Rooney must be sweating on their fitness with a fair chance that they may miss out unless they can get through a few games in April.

No thanks to Wilshere, far too knock happy, the guy could get a sprained wrist while doing up his laces.
Great ability, far too injury prone. He's another Jamie Redknapp/Darren Anderton. Alli all the way for me, he proved last night he can mix it with the big boys.
Many had doubts about Gazza for Italia '90, saying they'd prefer the likes of Steve McMahon or Neil Webb, we know how brilliant a risk Sir Bobby (RIP) made and how quickly he was vindicated.
Roy Hodgson is at the same crossroads with Alli, but it's a no-brainer for me.

He gets an awful lot of stick but I really do think Jordan Henderson is a decent player, he's not a household name and he doesn't play for a top top team but everytime I see him play for England or the rare occasion I see him play for Liverpool he has always done things right, he is consistent in his possession and his tackling and I think a lot of teams will struggle to truly break him down in midfield.
As for Rooney, I'd take him because I imagine his experience would be great to have around what is looking to be quite a young/inexperienced squad but I certainly wouldn't start him, he still a decent player and still has enough about him to help change a game for the better but he's miles behind Kane and Vardy now...he's had his turn and should graciously fade into the background and offer support to the young players...nothing more!
The squad MUST be picked on talent, not reputation, if England are to have any hope at all!

I've seen a fair bit of Hendo as a result of taking an interest in Liverpool (my dad's team). Must admit I think he's been poor this season since coming back from injury, it's been reported that he's been struggling with plantar fasciitis (sp?) for a while and I think it's the sort of problem he just needs to learn to manage. He's been a little better the last few weeks but I still prefer him in a midfield 3, sat in a midfield 2 he tends to just pass sideways and backwards too much, negating his real strength which is running off the midfield and going forward. I think he has suffered for losing Gerrard next to him and having the captaincy of LFC thrust upon him. He is a very honest footballer though... I hope if he is selected he does himself justice.
