have you been impressed with it? quite impressed that you obviously managed a win in the pre-order bunfight. i didn't bother trying (for a series x), and it looks like it will be months before it's easy to just pick one up.

It's early days, mate, but initial impressions have been very good, particularly the 4K Ray Tracing. The form factor, although quite big, looks very slick, but time will tell if the cooling/ventilation is up to the task when we start seeing games that really push the hardware. PS4 was bloody awful, it sounded like Thunderbird 2 was taking off and I had to wear earphones when playing games as I just couldn't hear the in-game dialogue at times. Jim Sterling (a Youtube reviewer) has rightly said, though, that the PS5 is just not worth your dignity, so wait for the scalpers to die off before getting into a click battle to get one. My son managed to snap up a Series X on launch day via his game pass account, where the cost is split into monthly payments, rather than paying for it outright - he received it yesterday, On paper, the series x looks the more powerful of the two machines, but it's up to the developers to maximise that potential, otherwise they're just figures on a spreadsheet for Top Trumps anoraks. Indeed, I remember the Sega Mega Drive having a more powerful CPU than the Super NES, but the Nintendo machine was arguably the better machine. I've seen photos of my son's console in his room and it looks really smart, with the ventilation being straight up and out of the top of the console, rather than just a few side vents - well, heat rises, doesn't it! It looks like Microsoft really are taking the fight to Sony this generation, which is a good thing in my view, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they have to offer on their beast of a machine, especially since my son and I have agreed to temporarily exchange machines and games at some point so we can play each other's exclusives!

the SNES was undoubtedly better, particularly when they started putting the additional chips in the carts (was it system 7?), and i say that as a former megadrive owner.
although i've seen footage of various last-gen games, i'm hoping i'll still get a jolt when -probably in several months- i pick up a series x, having missed a generation - for me it will be the first experience of hd gaming never mind 4k/60hz. i won't be able to go for the whole 120hz on the games that will support it because although my tv is 4k, it just doesn't have a high enough refresh rate to go the whole way. i'm also looking forward to having an SSD in a console - those interminable 'you have just triggered a door....now please wait two minutes' loading times were horrible on stuff like skyrim on the 360. PS5's SSD is significantly quicker, but it should still be pretty good on series x and that has also got the quick resume feature on your last few played games.
some cool innovation from both sony and ms, but as always, we will have to wait until developers properly get to grips with them. may well not be for another couple of years before we really see the stuff that will define the generation. the PS5 is definitely the better immediate proposition because it does have at least one big exclusive at launch, but i'm kind of hoping for success for both new consoles so they push each other on, hence ms coming back this time with a bit of a beast of a machine after their poor showing last time around.

It was Mode 7 that was built into the SNES hardware that was used in games like Mario Kart, F-Zero etc to rotate the display (I think), but the chip you're thinking of was Super FX that was used in the Starfox cart, the chip was developed by Argonaut. To demonstrate my utter nerdiness on this, I didn't have to Google any of that information, as I was a full-on Super NES fanboy back in the day!

I do think the Series X is going to be big hit, not least because of this huge coup for the guys in Redmond: www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-09-21-microsoft-buying-zenimax-parent-company-of-bethesda-id-software-and-more-reportIt's going to be one hell of a battle that, like you, I hope will see both formats push each other all the way and see both have great success - it can only benefit the gamers on both machines in the long run!

i nearly bought a special edition cyberpunk xbox one x by mistake yesterday because i'd been have a sneaky look at series x availability. of course there was none, but under the series x page, the site listed other offerings. i wasn't particularly arsed about cyberpunk, but if there was a stealth way to get a series x i thought i'd reconsider. and i initially thought it was a series x with a cyberpunk bundle.
sites are going to get morons like me buying the wrong one if they're not careful with their listings. obviously MS are responsible with their too similarly named 'ecosystem', but it could be easy to f*** it up looking on your phone. i would have created embarrassed merry hell if i'd bought 2017's news for £490 or whatever it was going for.

You should look into the game pass, mate.
My son has it and swears by it and says there are games on there he wouldn't have bought that really turned out to be great, plus there's loads of new content being added to it including EA stuff, so Microsoft really are going to town on their new beast.
Anyway, you can get the series X via game pass and pay monthly, so it might be worth looking into to save you shelling out for one in one big payment.
Cyberpunk isn't coming in a series X specific version, just Xbox one, PC and PS4, but the delay may have been to optimise it enough so that the Series X can maybe upscale it, but who knows.

yeah that is apparently the case.
i'm definitely getting gamepass - again, given that i've missed a generation, it feels like a great bonus. i'm intending to hump the full price in one when i can though, even though it's a very good deal.

Just to add, the console via game pass deal that my son has is 0% interest via a partnership with Game.
It's best to buy outright if you can afford it, though, I agree, because you can just forget about it then. If I could afford both consoles, I'd definitely get both, as they both seem to be genuinely killer pieces of kit.
It's going to be interesting to see what exclusives come from Microsoft, especially given the money they've invested in ZeniMax and Bethesda.
Exciting times!

The shitshow continues.
Twitter going mental over restocks that went live at 4am this morning, with some buyers saying they had their orders cancelled and will be refunded within 7 days.
Now they can open again, why can't these stores just have in-store orders only? People may end up queuing in the rain, but at least any queue jumpers can be punched squarely in the face and booted down the road empty handed this way.
I'll tell you why, because they're desperate for cashflow and are exploiting these new consoles to do just that, not giving two sh**s if the scalpers get them all, as long as they get their money.
I can honestly say that I really wouldn't bother getting involved in trying to beat the seagulls to the tip on this one, because you're more than likely going to end up feeling worse when the sites crash and they've all been scalped.
f*** the scalpers, let them stock up until they've got no room for any more. I remember when they bought all the Nintendo Wii consoles on release, it wasn't long before the stores were full to the ceiling with consoles, forcing them to drop their prices to get rid of their stock.
I bought one from a Northern Irish seller who had sh*t loads of them and couldn't get rid of them quick enough, so be patient and tell your kids there's a shortage and they'll get one in the new year, it'll give them an extra Christmas present to look forward to and in the end they'll thank you for it.
f*** you, scalpers and f*** you, all the stores cashing in on this and not giving a single f*** about the kids who really want them this Christmas.

i think 'f*** off scalpers' is a decent festive message to be honest mate. My girlfriend's sister got to hear of some stock going up at a well-known chain last night, where one of her friends works. She was on the site ten minutes before they went live and had a PS5 in her basket and got onto the payment page within sixty seconds of them becoming available, but she STILL missed out. There's no two ways about it, these bots are cleaning up, as that PS5 was ready for purchase in less than a minute and the site was working perfectly. The moment she'd entered her details and pressed 'place order', it had ground to a halt and crashed. There's just no beating these scumbags.

saw there was a british scalper clan who were claiming they'd used bots to buy 3,500 PS5s and 1000+ series x from Very, but Very reckoned that all sales on that day were as a result of a glitch and cancelled and refunded them all. only a very (!) tiny slap in the face for the scalpers, but at least it doesn't always go their way. 'scumbags' is definitely the right word.

I think it was the spokesperson for that group who tried to dress their disgusting behaviour up by claiming their members can now "put food on the table for their kids"!
I can kind of understand where he's coming from, though, as I imagine scraping the money together to put caviar and Bollinger on their meagre tables every day must cost way more than the measly £400+ they're forking out for these consoles.

i used to hate seeing all the 'any spare tickets' kn*bheads outside gigs and games, who always seemed to be either manc or scouse, but i have a hard time with them organising with tech like a touting OCG. i hope a lot end up with plenty of stock on their hands that they have to keep dropping the price to shift. expoitative w**kers.
