Note from the Borehamwood chairman - he has again generously offered to lay on a free breakfast for all those Wood fans travelling via the away day travel club to Stockport. Nice gesture.

I've got this down as a draw. BW are another inform side unbeaten in 10 so we will need to be tuned in right from the off.

The last games for both teams ended in scoreless draws so expect goals galore.

First Saturday in ages when I've got time (and permission) to listen to the game.
It's my fault. Switched it off now.

the sciatica i had treated myself to over christmas had retreated enough to consider going today. glad i slept in instead. i find it bizarre that we're still only a handful of points off the top when we're so wildly inconsistent - shows the level of the division really.

Could they be our new boggie team ? 29 travelling away fans, not even a coachload ! Says it all really.

In the first half, Keane worked an opening from distance and fizzed in an effort which caused a spill. Osborne and Walker combined one time, penetrating past their midfielders and running at their back line. And we had one good team move down the right where we slid it inside on the deck to Bell, who laid off for Osborne - but his attempt was well-defended by the defender throwing himself in the way. Unfortunately most of that, if not all of it, came once we were 2-0 down... and they had cracked the woodwork too for good measure.
Simply put, they were first to everything. They were quick into the tackle and moved around the pitch as a team. Faster, stronger, concentrating... they did look like they 'wanted it' more than us.
Tactically, it was clear they were looking to spread play at pace and take advantage of any weakness we had in shape out of possession - and sadly that weakness was there for all to see. The front 4s lack of aggression and organisation out of possession to get any effective press going, or to channel the play, simply afforded time to BW. With pacey players up front, our defence was soon regularly retreating to its own 18-yard line. The pitch for them was huge in possession and unless one of theirs made the poor decision of trying to run through Keane (which few will do successfully as he's excellent in 1v1 tight scenarios), we couldn't get near them.
The opener saw the ball moved from their left to their right... no idea where Garratt was but he wasn't at LB. The move resulted in their attacker having all the time in the world to advance towards our box and get his shot off. It was a poor shot, straight at Hinchliffe. Unfortunately Hinchliffe got this one all wrong, seemingly stooping and making a 'scooping' motion to save it but missing it entirely.
We didn't wake up or change anything to deal with the joy they were having. The general tactic all game for us seemed to be for Bell to stand, be hit with the long ball and for others to play off him. But the combination of terrible balls from a very deep back line, a lack of support to him (which often comes from us regaining the ball when we're incredibly deep), and then generally being poor when they did have it in some advance positions didn't instil confidence that things would end well!
As with the first, their second saw a lack of anything remotely effective in defending on our left and the ball was laid back for an unopposed curling shot from distance which went directly over Hinchliffe. The third was a well taken goal coming from the other side of the pitch.
Mini-Herm was asking if we could leave should it go to 4 and I said things would be better in the second half. Even without altering anything tacticlly or player-wise, I'm a firm believer that teams tend to blow themselves out after having such an energetic and effective half and that the other side will get more joy. That said, 2 changes were made by JG with Rodney and Cowan replacing the full-backs and Rodney adding more of a partner presence for Bell. The cumulative effect of less pressing from them, better balls hitting Bell and having a striker play off him saw us getting more joy. And for the most part we had the better of the second half with Rodney guiding a shot neatly for a bit of hope.
The ref was pretty shambolic and the liner tried to outdo him by awarding them a throw when the entire stadium could see it was ours (even their subs warming up were laughing it was so bad) but, ultimately, for all our frustration with their performance, it was our first half shambles that gifted them the game. File under 'authors of our own downfall' and move on.
