Here we go then – a results show more anticipated than Strictly Come Get Me Out Of Here Factor, it’s the 2019 County Heaven Awards.
You have been voting in your hoards* to select your favourite County Heaven moments and memories over the last 12 months.
*outright lie
And what a year it has been! So, let’s see what you made of it…
1. Player of the Year
Here are the nominees:
• Matty Warburton
• Ben Hinchliffe
• Ash Palmer
• Frank Mulhern
And the winner is…I mean… are:
Ben and Ash as joint winners.
Here’s what you had to say about them…
Ben:
“Finished the 17/18 and 18/19 seasons top of our MotM table and, aside from the odd error, remains a largely stable figure between the sticks in the higher division with its higher demands on a PT player.”
“If he wasn't in the middle of our goal, I really don't think we would have achieved everything we have.”
Ash
“A crucial piece in the jigsaw for mounting our successful title campaign, and now looking good at the next level, too.”
Congratulations to both and we wish you both a fantastic 2020 in a County shirt.
2. Goal of the Year
Lots to choose from over the last 12 months and the nominations for the "Mulhern vs Dover award for the best goal" for 2019 are:
• Adam Hamill’s goal from his own half in the friendly vs Trafford
• Mulhern’s cheeky ‘he’s behind you’ against Bradford PA
• Mulhern vs Dover special
And the winner – by some, er, distance, is Frank’s spectacular volley against Dover
“Simply brilliant goal at any level of the game.”
“Touch of Rooney about it.”
“If anyone scored a goal like that in any league you would be struggling to top it.”
Special mention for Adam’s goal: one contributor was there and said, "…it looked pretty amazing... but with no video footage available, you will have to take my word on this!"
3. Best Achievement
Some real variety here:
• Sponsoring Jim and Alan again
• Sharing petitions to encourage fellow Heaveners to sign on important issues
• Dudley - taking the leap and making a new life for himself in warmer climes. (Much respect for that)
• Maccy media work and becoming County's official match reporter
And the winner is, maccy
“After years of doing it voluntarily, it’s great to see him being officially recognised”
“macc’s time as match tweeter, what an amazing servant to the club and Heaven”
Well done, fella.
4. Thread of the Year
Here are your favourite threads of 2019...
• Bar Jokes
• Len’s Walking Football – ‘always an inspiration’
• WTF Thread
• ‘The Tories are a Shower’ Thread
• Caption Competition
• This very CH Awards Thread
And you voted for the Caption Competition as your favourite thread of 2019. With now over 70 pictures, this has proved a popular addition to CH
This list shows the sheer variety of topics we cover on CH. Wonderfully summed up by one contributor (who was referencing ‘The Tories are a Shower’ thread, but could equally apply to all of CH):
"We are not just football fans that need to be moderated by BBC 606 officials for talking about the weather, this place has allowed us all to develop and share a greater understanding of each other, the nation and indeed the world. This is the greatest 'pub chat' location in the world!"
Beautifully put.
5. Funniest Heavener
A good number of nominees here as we are a very funny bunch: hermann, ceefer, sandy, eps, ars
And the wiener is… ars. (Maybe not your best ever win, but it’s up there…)
About ars you said: “for the 'other voice in my head...if I had a hilarious other voice in my head' contributions”, “still the undisputed master of the hilariously withering put downs”
About eps you said: “some excellent bar room jokes and general quips often bring a smile to my face!”, “always posting gems on the Bar Jokes thread that crack me up”
6. Games Master of the Year
Will it be: lennie, sandy or ceefer-y?
This was very, very close, with the winner – just – being Lennie’s Limerick Lounge
There is a man from the sticks
Who likes to compose Limericks
He is a good sport
‘Cause he writes them too short
And asks us to provide a funny fix
About len you said: "he keeps us amused all year round!!"
About sandy you said: "let's face it, he's a pretty masterful quiz-creator"
About ceefer you said: "only because I do reasonably well at it"
(and, to be fair, about ceefer’s prediction league you also said, “as it keeps us interested in the smallest nuances of the games”)
7. Staff Member of the Year
The nominees are:
• gazz – “the tinker man”
• sandy
• ceefer – “Mr County Heaven”
And the winner is gazz
“for his amazing technical wizardry”
“thanks to gazz for the technical side of things”
“a real selfless worker who prefers to lurk in the shadows but deserves to be recognised publicly more often!”
“for doing all the b*ll*cks with the forum that we need doing and being creative when we haven't actually asked him to be, producing an unusually good looking forum”
About sandy you said…
"due to the range of interaction he creates with the different games" [quizzes, CHEAP, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, Czech Mate, middle raged dad, and probably more I've missed out]
A special to “the anonymous member who single-handedly donated the entire sponsorship money for Alan Lord this season to help us sponsor both Jim and Lordy - he knows who he is!” [this person may or may not be an actual staff member, but I’ll allow it!]
And a final special mention… to all staff who keep this place running smoothly. Aw shucks.
And finally, the most coveted award...
8. Heavener of the Year
Drum roll, please. Here’s the big one!
Two nominees here: macc and hermann
It was incredibly close and they almost shared the prize again, but this year the winner is… macc
And about him you said…
"really appreciate the write ups of the games, keeps me well informed as it can be hard as I'm not in the locality"
"among his other media work, he always bringing us his professional reports super-quick. Whether or not we've been to the game, we feel like we were... and that's a great skill."
"goes to all the games. writes about all the games. likes decent music. thoroughly nice bloke. started creeping into shot during interviews…"
And about our runner up, hermann, you said…
"for his incredibly detailed and spot-on analysis - as well as for covering the Man of the Match awards"
"for his incredibly detailed pre match analyses and post-match reports – a real boon to absent fans"
"for his in-depth knowledge of the game, his reports, posting the highlights and post-match interviews"
And the final word goes to one of our contributors with this:
Special mention to all Heaveners for helping make this forum the great place that it is!
Sums up 2019 on CH nicely.
Thanks for all who sent in nominations and gave me actual content to work with!
That’s it for this decade – one none of us will look back on very fondly, I imagine. From Paul Simpson replacing Gary Ablett in 2010 to Jim to McKn*ght and back to Jim again via Kalezić, Bogie and Young, relegations and promotion, it’s been quite a roller coaster! I wonder where we’ll be in 10 years’ time?
See you again at the end of 2020
Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to each and everyone one of you lovely people.
Many thanks!
