'Story of a genius' - the Kevin Pietersen story on Sky Sports.
It's easy to forget just how good he was and, warts and all, I'd still have him in any England team of mine.
Truth is, as much as he was responsible for the end of his Test career, I honestly don't think the people he fell out with can be totally free from blame.
When you have such a rare talent like his in your team, you need to go that extra yard and make exceptions for any 'quirks' of character and do everything you can to keep them happy.
As is usually the case in this country, we don't know how to deal with talent when we find it.
It's a great insight into a supreme talent, highly recommended.

Why is Root persevering with Jason Roy? Yet another cheap dismissal and, for me anyway, should not be picked for the next test.
A crazy decision to think he could open the batting in a test match, never mind in an Ashes series.
He's got to get the chop.

What the bloody hell is going on here? Utterly diabolical from the captain. Pffft.

3 down already. Absolutely spineless.
The urn is already being packed for the long flight home.

3 down already. Absolutely spineless. The urn is already being packed for the long flight home. Such are the benefits of developing a form of the game that revolves solely around the "skill" of trying to hit a cricket ball out of the ground over being able to get in line and play each delivery on merit and, where necessary bat for 2 or 3 hours and accumulate a score.

They do not know how to leave the ball alone. Just watch Smith, he knows where his stumps are and will wait for the bowler to bowl a bad ball. Which we all to frequently do.
And as for the Stokes dismissal. Over a metre from hitting the stumps. FFS

I said years ago that T20 was an Americanisation of the sport and would eventually have an adverse effect on test cricket, and I was right. As you say, mate, the patient innings is becoming a lost art. The writing was on the wall all those years ago when Chris Gayle said he preferred T20 to test cricket. It's all about money. Root has to step down from the captaincy after this and get back to doing what he does best - batting. Someone told me today that his average has dipped by 12 points since he took it on which, if true, is proof in itself that he really does need to let someone else have a go at leading the team. This has been nothing short of shambolic.

This has been nothing short of shambolic. I haven't been paying too much attention to it but the limited highlights BBC sport have been showing suggest that they can't even perform the basics like fielding properly. Root dropping an edged delivery that was aimed straight down his throat being but one glaring example. By all account there is some half arsed idea to reduce it to 100 deliveries per side. Why not just abandon the game altogether and toss for it, save everybody the trouble. Once again one is left astonished at the ability of the authorities entrusted with the development of the game to completely devalue it.

Seems to me like the captaincy and coaching are awfully misguided. Stuart Broad was on the radio before the start of play today, talking about how England have to let players like Roy go out and throw the bat at anything wide. Total cobblers.
They all need to snap out of this stupid belief that you don't need to adapt your game for different formats. There's no reason Roy can't be a test cricketer if he reigns in his shots until the ball gets old and the bowlers get tired.
The game lasts five days. Hang around for a bit.

I agree with this, but it turned out to be not just Roy today, as everyone ended up playing unnecessary shots. There's something fundamentally wrong with that team and it needs addressing.

Amazing skill and nerve shown there. I'm still in disbelief, mate. I've never seen anything like that in my time watching England Test Cricket. However this Ashes series pans out, Ben Stokes has well and truly written himself into the history books with that innings - a proper display of 'no guts, no glory'!.

Unbelievable, Geoff !
Riveting cricket and full marks to Jack Leach for hanging around. Best number 11 batsman England have had for a while.
Bad fielding, bad captaincy, shocking use of the review system and crap umpiring made that a great finish.
Has BS done enough to earn a nation's reprieve and win SPOTY ?

duds, did you see dina asher-smith absolutely ruining schippers and thompson in the diamond league, and not even looking like she was running that hard? I can relax now. Dina has just destroyed Shelly-Ann Fraser -Price in the diamond league 100. Running a season’s best a week after running a brilliant 200. The world championships are only 3 weeks away and she is going for a double. I can see her coming away with medals in both which would be an incredible performance.
