actually shows some concrete value in walker. he didn't impress me particularly, and seemed to be the least promising (however terrible stephenson looked earlier on, at least we knew he'd really done it at this level before) of jim's 'big' signings. 4 assists to one player from limited game time isn't bad going though. were those his only assists?

Be interesting to know (although impossible) what percentage of attempts did the assists come from. I would suggest that Walkers success ratio is quite low compared to, for example our 2 FB's. I remember quite a few games earlier in the season when taking corners/free kicks he repeatedly failed to clear the first man.

He also assisted (corner) Ball's goal in the 6-0 Southport win. In fact, the last 3 goals in that game were set-play assists from him. Pre-season (which I know doesn't count!), he assisted three times from corners for Oswell (2 against Macc, 1 against Alty). With Nottingham and Grand (Salford's defenders last season up for set-plays) scoring 20+, I was looking forward to having him putting in some balls for us to attack... which, let's face it, is where many goals at this level are actually scored. That said, the post where I linked to clips of Oswell's play featured Walker a fair bit, linking from deeper areas with Oswell which, in turn, did lead to goals and chances. As seen in previous seasons, the downside to Walker is that he does well at what he does - passing nicely and basically sitting in central midfield - but he's going to struggle beyond that due to his mobility. We have two players (Ball and Stopforth) with a physical make-up to break lines from midfield and get out wide from central areas if needed. Obviously Stopforth wasn't available at the beginning of the season so once Ball changed from #7 to #4 in the final pre-season game and thereafter 'sat', the weaknesses of Walker became all too clear (as did Ball's to be honest). So I would completely agree that, unfortunately, he didn't impress but will no doubt do well playing his usual game in a team that dominates possession.

I think the only corner we've scored from in the league not taken by Walker was one by Duxbury - the Alfreton OG thing? No idea on how many each our players have attempted though and, like last season, the success rate is low. Last season, many looked liked direct attempts to score from Lloyd. This season, many have been whipped in and not beaten the first man. Even in this last game, when JG said we've worked on corners in training, the footage isn't great for Thomas's deliveries. That said, I assume the script couldn't have been to go back post unless we were planning for Warburton to knock back across goal from the back stick (we usually use Smalley).
